Oh la la !

It is Friday AND..tadaa! …can you believe it, the Tour De France is starting today!! well tonight Australian time, 2.30am to be precise…
It is the perfect time to set your spinning wheel up (or knitting) and watch the french countryside woosh by and see guys in lycra work up a sweat….no, not MAMILS (=middle aged men in lycra)..lol and I must say it is around this time of year that I tend to listen to Jazz manouche music (remember Chocolat , the movie? With Johnny Depp?..i know you will..lol..that Django Reinhardt jazzy guitar music is great happy spinning music. YouTube the Rosenberg trio for example or Jazz manouche )  .

There’s is just something romantically comforting about it all , especially since it marks the two and a bit  week dash to the Bendigo Show. Everything is frantic here ..getting ready for the biggest show for the IxCHeL fibre farm: the living room is filling up with dyed tops and fibres and yarns, crates and crates of bunny paraphernalia are piling up , new bunny ideas are materialised , labelling, braiding, embroidering, sewing, painting, felting kits, quilting kits, silk fabrics for nuno felting! buttons, not to mention batty batt making in progress ..you name it....it is full FULL on !!
a very old photo I found of this quaint bunny cat trio on a steampunk bike contraption

No time for a huge commentary on last weeks happenings Im afraid…I’m slowly but surely running our of production time and the blasted flu attack hasn’t helped one iota..! I think the olive leaf capsules are taking effect though ! Which is a great relief, because the continuous sneezing almost broke a rib..lol

On this weeks blog I am offering you a tiny TINY tidbit of what is to come at the Bendigo show: some new Angel bunny tops (Blue faced Leicester, cashmere, angora and tencel) and bunny buttons !! so cute!!!!

Also please be aware , and this also goes for all you IxCHeL club members out there as well: it is the last chance to sign up for all my clubs this week! There are a lot of people on the waiting list as well and believe me you don’t want to miss out ;-) The next three months of clubs are going to be awesome (yes, eeeeevil plans are brewing..lol)

Chilly Winter Chook Adventures

It is with great sadness I have to announce to you the passing of our one of a kind super chook Caramel, who died of pneumonia in the early hours of the morning.  She was an amazingly quirky wonderful chook who thought she was a dog and came running when you called her name. She was half dead after an eagle attacked her in 2009, but after weeks of care she was stronger than ever, she survived two fox attacks and probably scared the fox away with her dog attitude...We will miss her dearly.

Instead of remembering this day with sadness, I would like to invite you to read the following which I also posted in my blog in 2009 about the age old question "why does the chicken cross the road?" .

Caramel, you will always be remembered as the brave Chicken who crossed the road.
May your walk to the Rainbow Road be a magical one ! Vale Caramel !!

So...Why did Caramel cross the road?

It is a famous question and the answer we have been given, throughout the ages ...... is WRONG!
Probably millions of dollars have been spent in research until.....we were shown the real reason by our chook Caramel, who had her bed in my studio after we nurtured her back to health after her being attacked by an eagle in 2009.. is terrified of other chooks for some reason and thinks she is a dog....
This discovery I will share with you today will change the world as we know it! Darwin, step aside ! Caramel is coming!
Caramel woke up that morning and was a chook with a mission! She leapt outside, went to the front drive and.....in a hurry started...crossing the road !

Once across she hopped on the bank separating the road from the Yarra forest....

and went straight for this eucalypt tree that seemed very appealing to her.....

quickly spied left and right if there was anything else going on ...and....

wiggled herself into a soft comfy spot to........LAY AN EGG !!!!

So next time you get asked the question "Why does the chicken cross the road" say with confidence: "TO LAY AN EGG !"

Follow the white rabbit

Winter has truly started, the fire is raging (which is good because it would be impossible to get any yarns or wool dry at all..) , the rain has been pounding down constantly and its getting cooler. No snow here or higher up on the mountains yet but I bet people are hoping it will be a good winter season. It sure is time to sit close to the fire with a good cup of cocao and marshmellows, knitting or spinning away ! and what better way to stay warm eh?

Doing all this “craft”work I think a lot..as you do when you are spinning or knitting or weaving or doing any kind of craft really. I believe that people who make things by hand and are involved in creating something from scratch have something special going on.

Making things by hand gives you a huge advantage over the people who just get the stuff ready made from the store. The first thing they miss out on is ofcourse that they have no clue whatsoever what kind of work or design goes into the finished garment or product. People who make things by hand themselves have a totally different relationship with products. We not only see the finished product but we can look beyond that and see and understand the workmanship that went into it, what it is made of. Secondly and this may sound strange to say it like this, but I do believe that we, who make things by hand, have a stronger bond with nature and appreciation of mother earth and the animals. It can ofcourse go to extremes when you start looking at random things and find yourself talking out loud, scaring those around you, by saying “Hey! I could spin that !!!!! “..pointing to a very fluffy looking animal or even cotton balls at the supermarket.

Needless to say our hoarding abilities are excellent, because everything can be used for something, even the little scraps of fabric can go into a handspun yarn or making a toy or a scrunchie (or chouchou as they are also called ). I love craft..any kind of craft..which makes it a lot harder to focus on one specific thing…it’s like the dog in the Disney movie “UP” concentrating and then all of a sudden yelling out “Squirrel !!!” Us crafters are a different breed that’s for sure..and some day they might even find that there is something like a Crafty Creative Gene !

The one other thing that crafters have in common is the fact that our breed always says there are not enough hours in the day to do what we want to do. I think that creative craft gene is definitely making the existence of a “being bored”gene in our breed impossible. We can never ever get bored. Get used to it! There is always so much to create and new things to learn !!! Don’t you wish you would have a built in USB port and could download information super fast about anything? : Lace knitting, making socks, weaving . just plug the file in and whoa! In 5 sec flat you know how to do all that intricate technical stuff you always wanted to know. But , I think that is only possible in the movie “The Matrix”and for all of us here in the “real”world, the only way to gain knowledge is to practice and learn over time and time is something all of us crafting creative gene folk just don’t have an abundance of. We multitask to the extreme and if I would have to make a list of the things I did in a day, that alone would send me into chaos land. Fortunately for me I do not make lists like that…it would just take too much time..lol. I do believe I went from multitasking (=doing several things at the same time) to so called “shift tasking”.. What I am trying to do is strategically layer my work tasks so that I am not pairing two resource intensive things at the same time. It means that I work on one project for a period of time and then shift to the next project. I know it is probably not ideal either , but at least it is less over powering and feels more like a train switching tracks or like how we work on the computer or “smart”phone now-a-days. It may sound exhausting but it is actually less so than the multitasking bit. Shifting between competing priorities may be the best I can manage until a rare windfall of time becomes available…I live in hope …

Well, my crafty creative gene has been on a roll lately and it’s ofcourse doubled in creative chaos ever since June 1st arrived. You know it is only roughly a month to go to the Bendigo Show!!!???? It’s this time of year our living room and every other room in the house actually ..looks like a fibery bomb went off: there are tops drying off racks, curtain rails..everywhere, yarns all around and a mountain of fluff the size of Mount Everest being prepped and dyed. I have to admit I was very very happy that the custom orders I promised to have finished before the Bendigo Show have left the building and are now being patted and hugged in their new homes. Now it is working on the gigantic list of stuff to do in the next 4 weeks and then it’s SHOW TIME !!!!

oh how is my flu going you ask? Well say no more, it is still there and making a bundle for the tissue industry. Hachooo!

And the bunnies? All the bunnies are doing great and other haircut sessions have been successfully completed. Especially the smoke grey and the chocolate browns have been proven to be high in demand. Topping, our chocolate bunny is a bit off her food and only wants to eat her greens and grass hay.She loves broccoli, cauliflower and kale leaves but doesn’t want to touch any seeds or grains. She is getting a bit older but it always worries me when their eating habits change: bunnies are so fragile.

One of the custom orders was to make a lavender french provencal art yarn with tailspun mohair curls ..here’s the result. The hardest part was not the spinning, but trying to get the colour just right for the customer. Colour is highly subjective, so somebody might have a totally different idea of what the colour “green”should look like. That is why I always ask for pantone ref nrs to compare what my brain tells me what colour it actually is. The most difficult request I ever had was to make a variegated yarn of “greens” and when I asked What greens? the reply I got was "well, you know..green"....
This Lavender colour was very very hard as well but thanks to good communication, getting the right colour combos was possible.

It is also Tour de Fleece time again !!! For those of you who do not know about this phenomena: on a website www.ravelry.com there are teams that started up to challenge their spinning and creating while the Tour de France is on. This is the third year our Team Ixchelbunny is in it and it is an absolute hoot! Check it out please and for all of you joining Team Ixchelbunny there is an added bonus of winning a prize every week of the competition AND you get an awesome 10% off on all IxCHeL product for the duration of the Tour de Fleece !!! How good is that!??!!! So, join ravelry if you have not done so already, join my group and the IxCHeLbunny team in the Tour de Fleece and start peddling …eh..treadling away !!! it’s FUN!!!!

I will leave you to snaffle to your hearts content ! Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions or requests : always happy to enable. Please know that I still do custom spinning and dyeing but all the custom orders can only be started after the Bendigo show.

A Bunny Fiesta: having a Ball with Fluff

Frida Kahlo with bunny

I thought after last weeks celebration a Fiesta might help to get rid of the flu…well, I’m definitely not flu-less yet, but I’m getting better. So all in all I guess that is a good thing. So, in my book, a fiesta or party is the best medicine for lots of things. What is this Fiesta she is talking about? Well, its not actually a party in the normal human kind of way, but nevertheless a party in my fiberholic mind. What happens when you put a lot of wonderfully dyed rovings together and blend it just a tiny bit to get a top? Yep, that’s right, you get a colourful fibre party, A Fiesta. The colours I dreamt of are Mexican colours, bright crimson reds, oranges, blues, greens, pinks, purples and all bound together with a rainbow of bling ! Now, if that doesn’t make you happy, nothing will..lol

The Fiesta tops on offer this week are angorino with a dash of glitz and you can spin (or felt ) them any way you like it ! You can choose to start spinning and let the fiesta top take you where no spinner has gone before! OR, you can experiment and predraft each individual colour separately and then ply them together on their own or with a contrast plying thread. Anything goes ! The results will be spectacular and unique !!!

Also, my fresh new harvest of Buddhas tears tea is available again, Buddhas tears tea is a hand rolled wonderful green tea that holds a beautiful jasmine tea pearl inside). This special Buddhas tears tea is all packaged up very nicely so it is a perfect gift idea as well ! I made a new label and packaged it all up in a very nice green organza bag : a perfect gift for yourself or for somebody else !

Ofcourse I have been dyeing and spinning up a storm in preparation for the Bendigo show and also trying to get all my custom orders done in time…oh how I wish I had about 48 hours in a day and didn’t need any sleep…I calculated that I would need to dye at least 10 kilos a day and spin heaps as well to get everything I want ready for the Bendigo show. That ofcourse doesn’t take into account the special projects I also need to do and the making of the badges and braiding and labelling…hahahahahaha….(yes I am hopeful….).

I do have a very special yarn on offer again this week :: an alpaca angora blend boucle yarn ! 50 grams per skein and there are 75 + meters per 50 grams. This boucle yarn is a textured super soft yarn and takes some spinning! The French term for “curl” is “boucle,” which provides some insight on how to spin this novelty yarn. Boucle yarn is a three-ply yarn with loops and bumps. In a factory setting, yarn manufacturers create a boucle yarn during plying by intentionally feeding one strand of yarn more slowly than the other. Hand spinners can create the same beautiful,, in my view, even a more beautiful boucle yarn by hand and with a lot of patience and having fun!  How you do it? Well it is a three part process: Spin one yarn fine, with a clockwise or Z-twist. Spin a second ply thick, counterclockwise or with an S-twist. Ply these two yarns together clockwise, but hold the thin yarn tightly, and the thick yarn loosely. This causes the thick yarn to loop around the thin yarn. Then ply the result with a binder using a counterclockwise or S-twist. The binder can be anything, even thread, because its job is hold the two other plies together while keeping the loops in place. It is a slow process but oh so worth it. You can use any fibre but I find that alpaca or mohair blends are most suited for this type of yarn because the loops stay very defined !

Close up of the boucle yarn.

Every loop doesn’t need to be perfect, it is all done by hand so it is good to have little imperfections”and quirky bounces: it all adds to the character and believe you me, Boucle is one of those “art”yarns or novelty yarns as they were called in the 80s and 90s that will make any project a winner ! It is textured and oh so soft : YUM!

I have actually noticed something that is going on these days. In the past hand spinners have tried to spin fine and make a beautiful so called "perfect"yarn, Then novelty yarns popped up like boucle and the industry have tried to copy that.  Now I find that more and more yarn companies are trying to get their machines to spin yarn that LOOKS like it is hand spun: creating bee hives, tail spun looking fluff  etc etc. But, no matter what : the hand spinners will always have the upper hand in my book. Why? Because no machine can create a unique loving yarn that has its litte quirky "mistakes"and colourful creativity.  Hand spinning or hand weaving is creating a one of a kind beautiful piece of art ! There are rules but rules can be broken to create new exciting adventures and isn't that what life is all about? Smile and have a fibery Fiesta everybody!

I will leave you to snaffle to your hearts content ! Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions or requests : alays happy to enable. Please know that I still do custom spinning and dyeing but all the custom orders can only be finished after the Bendigo show.
