Smart Superhero Spinning

Been a busy week..busy ..busy ..busy..BUSY!..teaching the last classes and final prep work for all the blends for Bendigo Show in July ! The blend here this week is one that I am particularly excited about because well, that’s what you get when you combine a fibre-holic with a geek : Superhero tops..lol So, this week its all about how we can make so called “smart” clothing or garments and what it means for us crafty geeky fibre-holics.

First of all: Apart from a jumper or socks or gloves that actually fit and look “smart” it is not quite that what I had in mind. No, what has been looked into for the last couple of years now, is a way to make the things you wear day in day out, pick up signals and translate it in a certain way. For example: build in sensors that register heartbeat and blood pressure, the number of steps you do every day. Even more! You can already buy the bracelets etc offcourse but now they are thinking further and putting it into clothes: so called “wearable tech”.

Sony has filed a patent application for a 'SmartWig', a wearable mass of hair that could give you directions and deliver tactile feedback to your brain -- all while aptly covering up those receding patches. In its filing, Sony argues that a high-tech rug is the perfect vessel for a wearable computer interface, as the head is more naturally sensitive than, say, a person's hand or foot.

"The fact that users instinctively protect their heads more than other body parts" is another plus, Sony argues, as it could deploy more sensitive sensors with less risk of the delicate tech being damaged. Sony details that the wig, which could play host to a GPS sensor, "may have a fancy or funny appearance", or could be inconspicuous. The definition of a wig shouldn't restrict the high-tech hairpiece to being made from just one type of hair, and could feature wool, feathers, yak or horse hair or even bunny…lol While Sony hasn't revealed any plans to actually start work on building the smart wig, getting the patent application filed means that Sony's executives can sleep easy, knowing that if rival tech companies try to steal their amazing idea, there'll be hell toupĂ©….pardon the pun…..

Wearable technology is tipped to be the Next Big Thing in the world of technology -- hot on the heels of smart phones. And, it can be much more than a bald spot cover up…it can be an in built healer: Here is a so called Vibeing jumper, made from super fine merino, stainless steel and built in circuits that vibrate and detect the area of your body that needs a massage.
Now you can wear your masseuse…do not use in water and no oil needed I’d say..lol

Now the circuits you see in the Vibeing jumper are not that unnoticeable, there is more, and that brings me to my Super hero blend and last weeks stainless steel tops: You can make a garment with the stainless steel and the blend that is conductive enough to make smart garments. You don’t need to, you can just spin and enjoy the wonderful feel of it and that is “smart” enough for you. However, you can look into incorporating smart technology to your wearables because the stainless steel is a conductor. You can knit gloves with a bit of extra stainless steel in the tips, which will make it possible to wear your hand knit gloves and operate your smart phone or tablet without having to take off your gloves ! And, that is not all!

You can even look into knitting your own portable energy device right there on your shirt! There is currently a study going on to make this happen. In a way it is very logical: we use energy but at the same time we also make energy, so why not be able to store that and use it to power your phone or tablet ? It is not that silly as you may think.

There is already a company SmartLife who makes clothes for the military and healthcare with inbuilt sensors. Developed over the last 10-years, Smartlife’s smart fabric technology captures electrical, temperature, sweat, pressure and flex data which is then translated via advanced signal processing into vital indicators such as ECG, heart rate and muscle contraction. Smartlife's SoftSensors can be used to produce clothing that delivers ubiquitous always-on real-time monitoring of a wide range of vital signs / body data at a quality comparable to clinical standards.

And then there is another company, King Gee, who is using nano technology for the ultimate clothes..wait for it… :

A DAY on the tools just got a whole lot sweeter for the nation's tradesmen, thanks to a new range of ''smart clothing'' that combats body odour. The workwear, by Australian company King Gee, uses nanotechnology to absorb body odour. The fabric is apparently so intelligent it can also differentiate between a bad smell and a good one; it will absorb your body odour but not your deodorant or aftershave. While King Gee's range of ''smart'' shorts, shirts and trousers will be a godsend for tradies, it also marks a new direction for the clothing industry in general, which could soon be offering socks that mend themselves, trousers that can power your iPod and luminous sleepwear you can read by…question is : How do you turn your shirt “OFF” when you want to go to sleep?..lol

Already the multibillion-dollar intelligent clothing industry, which incorporates smart fabrics and nanofibres as well as wearable technology, has produced hundreds of smart-garment designs. There's a shirt that rolls up its own sleeves when the wearer gets too hot, a solar tie that charges your mobile phone, a suit with a built-in iPod, clothes that can change colour, gloves with built-in heaters, a shirt that enables you to be hugged via a mobile phone and a business suit that claims to kill swine flu when it comes into contact with the fabric.

In Australia, the CSIRO is leading local small clothing research and development. The organisation's textile and fibre technology department in Geelong is working on a range of intelligent textiles and garments, including high-tech yarns made from carbon nanotubes which could eventually be used to develop anti-ballistic and energy storing clothing for military purposes; garments that can be tracked via GPS systems to help locate wounded soldiers or missing miners; and clothes that can automatically contract around a wound to prevent blood loss. The team is also developing a range of garments with embedded wireless sensors (here's where the stainless steel and other conductive fibres come in !) with a variety of sports and medical applications, including remote rehabilitation and clothes that can notify nursing staff if a patient falls over. Dr Richard Helmer from the CSIRO says clothing is the perfect platform for many new technologies.
''It makes sense to be able to integrate new technologies and capabilities into our clothes,'' he says. Council of Textiles and Fashion Industries of Australia executive director Jo Kellock says many of the initial applications have been in the areas of medicine, military and things like extreme sports, but as the research and development progresses ''we will see it seeping through into mainstream fashion as designers look for a competitive edge and as we begin to think more about garment functionality and sustainability''.

UK hosiery brand Aristoc has developed fashion tights infused with fragrant oils, moisturiser and vitamins.

Levi launched the world's first iPod-enabled jeans and in February Adidas will launch a range of shoes that double as an ''augmented reality'' game, where the sneakers are also the game controllers.

Meanwhile, King Gee plans to increase its intelligent fabric range as the technology becomes more affordable. ''One of the challenges with a lot of these treatments is that they're new and a lot of R&D has gone into them, sometimes they can be very expensive,'' says King Gee marketing and communications manager, Mirjana Dujkovic. ''But as they become more available and affordable, I think we'll be seeing a lot more of them in everyday brands,'' she says.

Well, there is lots to think about and to discover. It is exciting and really makes you think that , well, anything is possible..even in knitting and fibre!

The new blend I have been working on and aptly namesd“Super hero tops” is an amazing blend of Super fine Angorino, Suri, Silk, Cashmere and yes, Stainless Steel. It is super soft, very nice to wear and long lasting! It is strong and shiny and has a great drape and at the same time it can offer you the protection against the EMFs we talked about last week!

Not only that but if you were to spin the stainless steel tops from last week separately you can knit or weave in circuits to make your garment super hero smart !
It also works great as longlasting socks that will have a hard time wearing out! And is great for sweaty feet or armpits for that matter.
The Steel is 316L which means it doesn’t rust, so you can wash it as any normal garment or blend.

If you do want to get the natural Super Hero top and dye it your self one tip: PLEASE DO NOT MICROWAVE! There is steel in the blend so its best not to introduce it to high micro waves which will make the machine go “Bang!”….but then again, Im sure you are not drying your bras with underwires in the microwave either…. ?

Today is a special day: Super Hero Day ! Enjoy ! and yes! Now EVERYBODY can be a Super Hero !

Please don't hesitate to contact me at any time if you have any questions okay? Always happy to enable. All my contact details are to be found at the end of this weeks blog entry. Have fun !!!

Craft is Art

En Garde ! Bunny Rebellion defending the craft = art movement

It’s been almost a week since the amazing handknitters guild yarn and wool show at the Coburg Town hall ! I had a great time seeing so many friends and their finished fibre projects and making the most of snaffling as much as they possibly could ! Thank you all for making the day so awesome !

People are amazing, but ....every now and again some actions make me cringe. Im sure that some of you who are selling at markets or trying to market and sell their lovingly made handmade things , have at one point or another gone through what I am about to tell you, but , for all of you who are not selling their lovingly handmade items or their skills teaching classes, here are some doozies that happened this week: Enjoy!

The Handknitters guild show day was almost at an end and the packing up of all the yarn and fluffy fibre was in full swing. A lady started to march towards the stall and started rummaging around. Nothing against that. Next thing you know, she is holding up two hand dyed Lush bunny tops and hands me $10 and started to walk away! I quickly put a halt to that and said very politely “ Eh..miss?..it’s more than $10, please look at the label on the fibre and you will see the price on there”…Then she mumbled in a huff and a puff “ Well!! I thought everything was $5 dollars! “ and THREW the two tops back on the table and walked away without blinking an eyelid…Tell me…has anybody else been through that kind of thing? Don't tell me it is normal practice..

At the arts centre market I had handwoven maya wraps for sale and next to them I had a little stand with photographs of our farm and bunnies: “3 for $10” it said on the photographs/cards….Next thing you know: A guy is holding three handspun, handwoven wraps up , throws them on the table and hands me $10…”eh no! you get three cards not three handwoven wraps that took me a week each to weave not counting the spinning SSSSir!! “…I mean!....What do you do??? Do people think? Do their brains ever compute facts like: it is handmade , takes a long time, ergo: I will just offend somebody terribly and offer them nothing for their work??? What’s up with that attitude?...

Society obviously does not see handmade items or craft as worthful elements and yet, sometimes craft items become highly sought after and huge money investment opportunities. Just look at what has happened to Navajo hand spun and dyed and woven rugs. They have become highly priced and sought after and ..rightfully so! It takes months of spinning, dyeing, weaving and finishing of the rug and it tells a story. It holds a mirror to the society it comes from and the society it goes to..it is craft..it is art..and I do not necessarily see a difference between the two. When does craft become art? And why is Art more highly admired and priced than some craft that takes longer to make with heaps more technical know how?

Also, how come that society will pay loads of money for a machine made garment with a famous label and reluctantly parts with haredly any money at all for something that is lovingly made without a label? All very relevant questions worth asking ourselves I think, especially for those of us who have to survive on what we can make with our hands and our spirits. It’s interesting isn’t it?

Another example of the difference between craft and “normal” society this time in regards to teaching. Now again, I love people and this is just one example, but nevertheless it is one example too many and something that really , well, makes me angry. Here it goes: I give workshops and classes all the time. They can range from beginner spinning classes to weaving to spindling to designing. This week I had a group of people here at my studio to learn how to spin. I lovingly create brochures, fibres and provide everything they need to make it a fun day, even baked a banana cake and bread to provide lunch. I spend days preparing everything. I lovingly give my time teaching. The majority of the students are absolutely fantastic, but there was one incident that on having to pay the tuition, one of them, after being given even more fibre because she would love to try plant fibres etc, says proudly “ I did not have time to go to the bank, sorry and I don’t think I will be back next week because I think I may be allergic to ???? “    WHAT?  Allergic to what? Being polite?
So, let me get this straight, you go into a class, take the class, take the freebies and the brochures, text books, get as much info as you want out of the whole thing and then brazenly walk off ? I mean, you don’t go shopping without money do you? It’s not like you go and take something you want from a store, get at the check out and say “ Oh I will pay later when I find time to go to a bank” ….. It is baffling and well, honestly, rude, especially because you are not dealing with some faceless multinational, you are dealing with a person face to face.

Blame me for being idealistic, but it does correlate to the whole of society looking down at people involved in “craft”… Or is this assumption totally wrong? I know I am making a big thing about something that is not even happening 0.1% of the time, but it is typically human, that that 0.1% takes up 80% of my thoughts when this kind of thing happens. Maybe because this kind of behaviour is so foreign to me and I would not dream of treating a fellow human being that way. I don’t know. This very small percentage of negative experiences should not take up a lot of my time..I know and still.. I am sure these are not isolated cases. I would love to hear what you think about it all.

And so, I keep smiling and I keep loving what I do and I keep loving people and….karma….lol

There are very exciting things happening here with an amazing new blend hopefully ready in time for the Bendigo show! A new blend that is so amazing it will make your hair curl and lift you up in the air …Not divulging yet…ofcourse !

Ipso Facto...SMILE !

(digital art Kaman William)

What a week it has been!: from manically getting fluffy stuff spun, dry and skeined and labelled to the outside reality of budget talks and politics…all of that makes me dive into surreal fun things with a vengeance..like listening to audio books by Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy and Restaurant at the End of the Universe).

Reading (or listening) to books like that just helps to keep the reality around us in perspective I feel. And, ofcourse , by doing that, ipso facto, puts a big smile on your face, which in turn, means you can battle that reality with way more vigour than before. See it as ammunition.

Smiling and treating things in a bizarre kind of humorous way and not getting all doom and gloom about it, is not a way of pushing things under the carpet./ On the contrary, I feel it is a way to step back, look at things that are , more often than not, utterly heartbreaking and , let’s face it, unjust. I am not a believer in “if you can’t beat them , join them”- theory. Midnight Oils singer tried that by joining politics and became way more ineffective in his social and political criticism for example.

Douglas Adams wrote in his Restaurant at the End of the Universe book "It's a well-known fact, that those people who most want to rule people, are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarise the summary, anyone who is capable of getting himself made President (prime minister), should on no account, be allowed to do the job".
Which ofcourse leaves us with THE political leadership problem of the ages…The best thing to do, as is with everything, stay critical with a high dose of surreality and humour , ready to be vocal and stand up for ones rights. Complain with a smile , if you want to call it that.

Smiling helps. It is my religion if you want to call it that. I will give you an example: Have you ever been in traffic, being tailgated by an angry motorist, and then , finally when he can get passed, blasts you with all kinds of angry blasphemous shouts? Sure you have! You know what I do? I smile even more brightly at him than I would normally do (see 1950s housewife advertisements) and ..wave …and SMILE !... There is NOTHING in the world that pisses off an angry person than a reaction they have not been anticipating. It is more effective than the giving him the finger or shouting back, or, chasing him down the road and giving him a bit of his own medicine. See? The “ if you cant beat them, join them”- theory just leads to YOU having to change and not have the situation changed for the better of mankind…I rest my case.

Smiling even helps getting better when you are feeling down, smiling helps combat depression, get over a heartbreak and so much more. Believe me, a smile a day keeps the doctor away. Forget the apple, but never ever forget to smile. It has to become part of your daily diet. That and reading or watching absurd comedy.

Now, before I forget, I have some yummy things on offer on todays update ! Also, please, if you could make it to the Coburg Town Hall tomorrow between 10am-3pm that would be awesome. That way, you can hug all the yarns and tops and other fluffy stuff I have been frantically (and lovingly) preparing in the last months. I would say DROP EVERYTHING (except your stitches !..lol)

Please don't hesitate to contact me at any time if you have any questions okay? Always happy to enable. All my contact details are to be found at the end of this weeks blog entry. Have fun !!!
