Under Bug Attack!

As soon as you feel your eyes glazing over, your hair starts to hurt and invisible electric centrepedes start crawling over your skull making your core temperature rise to 40C you know you are in trouble. Stubborn and equipped with an impeccable timing I did my blog last week, fell in a heap in bed, did the bunny spin in on Saturday, fell in a heap in bed onlyto find that Sunday was not getting any better at all: it was getting worse. It was not flu, my head only hurt when I coughed and launched me into a state of panic...

My eyesight dropped by 20points it seemed, I swayed and swaggered as if I were swabbing the deck of a Pirate ship and most of all I was embarrassingly slow. My brain seemed to talk a lot, I could hear myself thinking and talking at high speeds but as soon as I wanted to talk or write or type I was not even on dial up I was scratching the characters into a clay tablet. I was sick, very sick and I had to get help fast. So Paul drove me to Box Hill hospital where they surprisingly fast wheeled me into an emergency room , gave me a drip to get heaps of liquids into me again since I lost so much during doing battle with the electric skullcrawling centrepedes and the sweatpits of Hell. Test tests, more tests, no encephalitis..phew! tests more tests, temp came down then extra up again. It was unrelentless and attacking me all the time. I was coughing and wheezing and could not breathe. I felt I was slowly suffocating in Tar pits being attacked by electric skull crawling centrepedes that left my face tingly and were just the advent of more temperature hikes upwards! It was scary, but at least I was in the hospital..safe…oh well you know what I mean.
In the end they had no clue and I don’t think they have one now. I had to stay overnight for them to keep an eye on me and they fed me with anti biotics and drips but still the temp stayed around 40C ! and then down again after a good sweat I was soaked so many times I forgot to count. In the end they fed me “we think it is pneumonia but it is not really that clear on your x rays coz your x rays are very blurry….jeeez!....i am over it !

I have always done a lot of my own investigating so they can't feed me any bullshit but every time the bastards blatantly try to get away with near murder and not really caring about their numbered patients. I mean if I were a dr in a hospital I would not DARE to send an admitted patient away with 39.5C !!! ridiculous! But on Tuesday after a bunch of newbie doctors (remember it is a training hospital) discussed the case (obviously without a clue) discharged me and my 39.5 C temperature. I hated the food there anyway and the bitch in the next bed made me wanna wave a chainsaw in her face , because of the super loud tellie and the loud talk on two phones at the same time! , yelling to her "now multitask this , Bitch!" I mean, not good for my Karma.

Although I was almost picked up by a Sonny (from Cher) look alike who was obviously dealing with alcohol related dementia , dressed as if he stepped right out of Woodstock the movie and saying to me , just when I stepped out of the toilet with my tri pod after barfing and coughing my brains out : "wow! love your hair! you are a rainbow flower love child!!! hey..you know....i got an eh...am/fm radio....with speaker...eh....would you like to listen to some ..eh...tunes? " apart from the fact I actually thought, wow, who would have guessed that a tripod with saline solution, antibiotics ,wearing sweaty pj bottoms and a hospital gown and no make up actually would have given me a great way to pick up guys? lol.... it was sweet...bless him. I ofcourse answered "eh .... I really have to get some shut eye, but you go on and chill, Dude" to which he smiled and said "see you in the morning gorgeous!" as he walked off in the sunset..ofcourse never to be seen again...the typical bloke thing...lol

Anyway, when I left they told me I had pneumonia or as I like to call it New Moania …..my condition worsened, my temperature went up and down like yoyo and was always way up near 40C. I could not take it anymore yesterday so off we went to a local GP who got some other results back and told me I had three infections amongs other things bronchitis as well ! Oh isn’t that wonderful!? Back home, back to bed.

It is going to take a while to get over these "bugs" ( and who knows at this stage how many if these alien bug colonies have set up camp in me) but thankfully the electric skull crawling centrepedes have disappeared and I have temperatures under 39C again which is such a relief!

This update is just an update , not a fibre update I’m afraid. I am happy I can do this much and get the clay tablet all written up , let alone do some dyeing and spinning and putting new stuff up here. My hubbie, Dr Paul, is keeping a close eye on me, so I am off to bed again. I will keep everybody updated on how things are going ofcourse here and on RAV and on facebook, but please be patient. Knowing me , I will be hopping back to it sooner than later, but this one is a really nasty mess at the moment.

Have a great grand final week and chat soon !
((hugs)) Charly

On the Fringe of Subtle….eh..…SQUIRREL !

citron smile

If you think that this blog is all about my rainbow CITRON shawl, it is not….It does not have a fringe, nor is it “subtle”with all its outrageous rainbow happy colours. It was heaven to knit though and it is like wearing a smile And ofcourse it totally suits my image as a “subtle” bunny…lol. but…it is not what I want to share with you this week……….…..SQUIRREL ! ( wait !, it will become clear….lol)

It is another kind of subtle: you know, the subtle in “understated”, “delicate”, faint”and “restrained”, but nevertheless sharing something difficult. Those of you who know my journey (see previous blogs in 2009+10) will know what I am talking about. I am going to try and illustrate this by way of two movies and three little scenes:

How to master the Art of French cooking and subtlety
I watched the movie “Julie & Julia” (with Meryl Streep). My Paul is very happy I discovered her cookbooks by the way, although he needs to work out more now> Almost all the recipes are with BUTTER and CREAM…lol.. I will “walk you through the subtlety on the fringe I was talking about:

(Scene1) Julia and Paul Child walking in a park in Paris, enjoying the Spring , when a woman walks past with a baby in a stroller..Julia follows the stroller with her eyes, Paul Child notices and taps her understandably on the arm……….(.silence)….

(scene2) Julia sits in her kitchen while Paul unpacks the groceries, while Julia opens a letter from her sister in the States…you can see a shake going through her..Paul Child walks towards her, anticipating bad news…..”Dot is pregnant !”, Julia says with a devastating smile on her face and tears in her eyes …ïsn’t it beautiful?!” as she starts to sob sadly and smile at the same time…Paul Child embraces her with compassion………(silence)

Subtle messages, that a lot of people probably skimmed over. I, on the other hand, started sobbing and being extremely emotional, pointing at the screen, blabbering to my Paul, saying “ isn’t that beautiful?!!” ...........
The reality of coping with being childless- not by choice- was to be seen on the tv screen!.. It was however extremely subtle and above all Silent, but nevertheless, it was shown!
In the war of editing and moviemaking, how did Nora Ephron manage to put these scenes in all their silence and subtlety in this big Hollywood movie?..but I digress………...SQUIRREL! (bear with me: it will make sense after the next paragraph..lol)

Less subtle but still silent as a Pixar...
So, Paul and me, were about to watch a Pixar/Disney movie (we love kids movies, animation and all that fun stuff..yes, call us weird..lol) We heard it was an excellent fun film, so how to know that I would spend the first 25minutes of this animated movie sobbing uncontrollably ..happy and amazed I might add..! yes! Why? Again I will walk you through it……….:

(scene) Carl and Ellie share a passion of exploring and their love for one another…all in silence we see the lives of these two people evolve from 8year olds (I’m guessing here..lol) to the end of one…..they look at the clouds, being together having picnics and enjoying life.. babies are shown in the fluffy clouds….painting of the nursery begins, the camera pans from this happy colourful place to the dismal grey surrounds of the hospital where Ellie is being told something devastating by the doctor, the doctor shakes his head, Ellie starts to sob while Carl is holding her……silence
next scene; Ellie sits alone in her garden…obviously very sad…..silence. (their lives move on……)

All is told in SILENCE but oh so powerful…I am sure that “some would be yawning and asking “when does the fun stuff begin? …but, it was subtle and on the fringe: more out there and in your face, especially in a KIDS movie!

I could not believe my eyes and again I started sobbing and emotionally pointed at the screen , saying to Paul : “ isn’t that beautiful?!!”…

Maybe there are more movies out there, dealing or trying to deal with this huge issue, but definitely not many…I am probably developing this sixth sense of this kind of imagery and these messages. Most all I have a "Want, a Need, a Desire", to have so many people touched by unwanted childlessness, acknowledged.
Kind of like when you were a kid and you wanted a red bike and all you could see for the rest of the week were red bikes everywhere..lol…but I digress…..SQUIRREL !!!! (see UP! The movie please!... there are some amazingly funny scenes in there ..referring to Dug the dog ofcourse..lol………………………..SQUIRREL ! see it wasn't about fibre at all I'm afraid, but it was fun to see where your minds went..lol)

The point I am trying to make is that these subtle messages, however important, are shown in SILENCE, as is this subject treated in real life. I truly believe that the Silence needs to be broken and become less subtle. If ever there was a situation that is heartbreaking, it is this.

No more silence after miscarriages, no more silence dealing with cancer ( I remember in the “old”days that word wasn’t even allowed to be mentioned and was, if at all, referred to as “C” …at least we have evolved and saying it out loud, telling it as it is) , no more silence dealing with devastating hormone imbalances( whether it be through natural menopause, peri menopause, fertility treatments or like mine: surgical menopause) that make the lives of so many women Hell with a capital “H” and above all: the compassionate embrace and acknowledgement of the childless family. Before I get off this weeks soapbox…... I almost forgot this:

Let’s all be on the Fringe of Subtle and travelling towards the Compassionate Exuberance that is Life…………….and above all: be amazed and …Smile !
………………………………..
……………………………………………………………SQUIRREL !

The Strangeness of Being

The last week was strange..yes, strange. In absence of a word to exactly describe this week, “strange”is about as close as it gets. We are in drought yet we drown, Labour lost in the way of pure Labour seats but won, nostalgic memories and loss, healthy but not quite there yet and last but not least the Relief of Acceptance.

So….. we have a government ! I thought we were doing just fine without one but at least we proudly have a first elected female prime minister and an opposition leader who says that the opposition actually had the most votes. I am guessing that if the liberals would have had Mz Bishop as a party leader the fight might have been decidedly different, but hey, maybe we can have an all female political battle next time. Anyway the losers win….the meek shall inherit the earth in other words: it was a biblical match. Hoorah for Julia! Hopefully "they"know now that independents and minorities make a difference and yeah! for the Greens (I do love Bob..lol)

Other strange happenings on a more nostalgic level: As you know I have lived this life in different worlds, worked in very different interesting ,and sometimes I must admit, less interesting fields of work and play. I have met and worked with hugely interesting people. For some reason or another I thought back on the music and poetry I loved so much from a friend in the past when I was studying at Uni in the Netherlands. There was a lot of political activism as usual in those times, protests and most of all lots of song and cabaret. I was singing in bands, having a great time and had the immense luck to meet this shy guy with a magnificent brain and performing as well: Bram Vermeulen. This was in the late 80s when he was performing with his band De Toekomst (the future). It was years and years later that I saw him again, more grown up and absolutely brilliant in his poetry and songs, paintings and piano playing, performing in Belgium when I was working there as well. For some reason or another, I mean it is not that you hear his songs played on the radio here coz they are in Dutch ofcourse..lol, I thought of him and looked him up in Wikipedia: shock-horror-he died in 2004 on the same day I was thinking of him! How bizarre but most of all what a loss. I have not stopped listening to his songs on YouTube… in his words: “ dood ben je pas als jij me bent vergeten” Or in English: “ I’m only dead when you have forgotten me..” He lives on!

Bram

On a more joyful note : after a month of anxiously waiting for my test results from the oncology department I finally received a letter saying all is “normal” see you back in 6months….then I received a phone call from a woman saying “this is the hospital oncology……) and my ears stopped hearing properly because my mind went into this frantic thought of “oh my gawd they made a mistake something IS wrong..” …. and my heart stopped…only to get my hearing back when she started saying “…..would you like to buy some tickets for the childrens oncology fundraiser……….it was not even the oncology department of the hospital! It was a third party cold call ! yep, strange week indeed.

All this did trigger something BIG, something huge, something life changing for me and for Paul: with me not getting a clean bill of health yet for another three years at least!, the chances of adoption are not only slim but dismal. I mean, even with a positive outcome of good health (of which I am sure by the way..fingers crossed lol) there is a loooong waiting list to adopt. We talked, cried and were honest with each other and made the decision that we would walk on the road less travelled and would not pursue the years of relentless agony of the waiting game, keeping our lives on hold but instead move on, stronger and wiser and happier in the knowledge that we can be a family together. I cannot tell you how much of a relief this decision has brought about. Moreover, how much it means to be able to acknowledge, accept and be a stronger person because of that. There will be emotional times: friends having babies, friends becoming grandparents and knowing that we will never have that. Accepting loss is the first step to healing and becoming stronger and I am so happy that we, as a family, have taken that first enormous leap. Now, if only the rest of the world would see that families do not consist of a mum, dad, a son and a daughter , this world would be much more “realistic”..lol

And now, in the words of Monty Python, for something completely different: the rain still keeps coming down which is transforming this part of the world in huge mudslides and wetness…We still have not built an ARK but if it keeps coming down I am thinking we might have to think about building a houseboat with enough room for all the fuzzy wuzzy members of the family as well. It is spring by now but my body and mind still thinks it is winter and has a tendency to hibernate because it is so dark and wet and cold. I have not given in though and dyed up a storm with heaps of yummy new batches of Twinkle bunny tops and cashmerino laceweight yarn and some very special hand spun and hand dyed yak bunny and angora cashmere. I have seen that YARN magazine nr 19 published my energy wave wrap ! yeah! Thank you so much! It looks absolutely stunning in print being worn by a great looking model. She is wearing the wrap made in the Woodstock colourway so in honour of that I have been dyeing some Woodstock and some very happy variegated laceweight for a happy summer wrap! I am also working on a summer circular vest in the cashmerino but more on that later when I have finished tweaking the pattern and taking photos etc.

Also some hand spun and hand dyed angora and yak bunny ! the yak bunny has an amazing yardage by the way and works great for socks as well !

Here are all the new fibres and yarns waiting for a good home :) Message or email me with your wishes and I will get right back to you with all the details !
