Garden adventures and other magic

No , Jazz has not turned to stone and grown some wings… it’s our garden protector: Jabberwocky !

After all the trials and tribulations of last week, this week was a leisurely drive in the park. On the Saturday I had the Bunny Spin in and ofcourse wanted to show my veggie garden, there was still a lot that needed to be done , so after the blog update I immediately got to work in the garden: making the garden edging, filling it with our  bunny and chook compost that is just amazing to kick start any garden! And stared planting herbs and fragrant plants like hyssop, bergamot, Mexican orange blossom , gardenia, chocolate mint, mint basil thymes and oreganos. These plants will introduce a lot of extra good insects to the garden which will help deter the things we do not want like cabbage moths etc. I am a true believer in companion planting so that is why I plant basil with my tomatoes and chillies, marigolds with my beans and cabbages, etc etc. Gardening is hard work but it is so rewarding . In the past when I did not have my raised beds, my seedlings were under constant attack from the abundance of snails. Even putting a snail cocktail bar (a tin filled with beer dug into the ground in the garden beds) could not contain their lust after the greens that were just planted. Now, it is amazing how the seedlings are thriving and as of yet I have not discovered one itty bitty snail munching away on the greens. Amazing! I think it has definitely got something to do with the eucca mulch spread around the raised beds, the fact that there are no weeds they can hide under and the raised bed structure. Don’t laugh, but I do tend to police my veggie beds at night when slugs and snails come out to play and look around with my torch to see if there are any breaches in my defence…lol…Maybe the Jabberwocky at the garden entrance is a bit of a deterrent as well, but time will tell..lol

I still have to add one more bed with strawberries and blue berries and then add some more herbs to the herb edging but then that fase is all done and I will have to get ready for the next step: seeding out new plants in my little green house, so there is a good rotation of new plants (that way you never run out) and also do a bit of crop rotation. For example if you ever have cursed the fact that your carrots are misshapen or their foliage is immense , thinking you will find a massive carrot , pulling it up and there is hardly any carrot to speak of, it is because your soil is too rich! Carrots thrive in soil that has just had cabbages and brassicas planted on them that have depleted the soil a bit of nutrients. When you plant your carrots after your cabbage harvest, you will find that your carrot harvest will look a lot better  and ofcourse here we need a LOT of carrots! The reason why I am so keen on getting a good producing veggie and herb garden is not only for our own food, but actually more so for our angora bunnies. The cost involved in buying organic greens for our animals is extremely high and the more we can do ourselves the better it is. Growing your own food is not only better for your finances , but also for your health and the environment ! and ofcourse it is a lot of fun spending your time out doors !

You can see that we have put a bench in the chill out area, excellent on those nice sunny days that hopefully will come very very soon !, watching your veggies grow and spinning or knitting ! It is so relaxing ! and believe me, after last week, I desperately need some relaxing ! (understatement of the year!) .

I somehow don’t think that relaxing will come any time soon, we are busy planning a huge renovation of our kitchen area (so there are no bunny spin ins next month ! beware! If you do rock up you can help us demolish and rebuild…lol) and to top it off: yesterday Pauls car totally broke down so now he has to use my Tardis Car to go to work and I’m stuck at the farm ….oh well, plenty to do here !! and I will just have to do my running around on the weekends….

Here are some photos of the garden, that I so want to make into a magical relaxing area, hence the jabberwocky, the rabbits and I am working on two massive statues : a scarecrow in the shape of the mad hatter and a set of huge bunny ears rising up from the earth. I will keep you posted ..

using recycled poles and attachments, a new netting framework went up to protect the seedlings from birds, cabbage moth and possums and chooks!.....the border still is not completely finished and some more chocolate mint, mint basil and other herbs like horseradish are still waiting to be planted out.

The tomatoes, basil, chillie patch with some komatsuma (Japanese spinach or mustard spinach) and on the other end you can see the broad beans and french beans taking hold ....not all the planting is done yet, so some soil is protected from drying out and at the same time makes it impossible for weeds to germinate

the chill out area......
now its just a matter of waiting for some nice dry weather or I will just have to build a roof to go over the top !

I love the way this border came out!......
Not only does it hold a lot of good fragrant plants and herbs, it also divides the bush from the veggie garden and makes it easier to maintain and improve the soil , that has been washing away and eroding due to the storms that have been pounding away here

renetting system all done......

Before you think I have done nothing else but gardening and landscaping, there have been some wooshes and batts made and a lot of exciting stuff is going to happen in the next couple of weeks so keep your eye on this space !

Ninja Bunny

See the ninja bunny ? Well, That is what I felt like: heart beating out of control, steam rising from ears, a volcano about to erupt….silence….swallow..deep breath…..focus…..breathe, breathe……and ….Swing ! ….

Tuesday: I called the oncology ward at the hospital again….This time the receptionist  let slip  “Oh..eh…oh , so you didn’t hear anything in the 4th of September then?” “No, I didn’t and would I be calling if I had?”….silence on the other end….silence…”Eh..oh…well, I cannot tell you anything but….” And here is the part I had heard so many times: “I can leave message at the nurses desk and they will ring you back. You know the oncology ward is only here on Tuesday from 8.30 til 12? But somebody will call you….” ……I did not explode, I did not flinch, I did not yell..I stayed calm to try and stem the volcanic eruption about to take place and..grabbed the keys to the car and strode out of the door. It takes me a good hour and a half  maybe two depending on traffic, to get to the hospital, if I would have waited for them to give me a ring ---yes, as if- I could have waited another week and then another and then another. And this time I knew by that womans slip of the tongue, that there was something that had happened on the 4th of September. So , off I drove….breathe, breathe, stay calm, stay calm….it doesn’t help shouting or being upset and yelling at these people, it will do no good, they will just assume that I am the one needing a straight jacket…I needed to be as calm and collected as I possibly could to get through to them and tell them that they have failed horribly in their duty of care. So off I went, driving, breathing and talking it through in my head. It will be fine..it will be fine….

I arrived at the oncology ward a bit passed 11 am, in time…they hadn’t closed yet and the waiting room was filled with patients. “Do you have an appointment?” the receptionist said in a high pitched voice without even raising her head. “Yes I had an appointment”, I said, in the calmest of tones..”last month when there were biopsies taken and every week I have been told I will be called back and nobody did. I’m trying to stay very calm here ---enter smile on my face coupled with a deadly stare—but I have just driven 2 hours to get some answers”. I didn’t have to say another word..she tried…but I think the look on my face was lethal and she may have contemplated to call the warden because a bomb threat was imminent…. So off she hops , waiting waiting….. She comes back after about 30 minutes holding two pieces of paper : A histopathology report and a letter without letterhead , both of which she wanted to put away in my patient folder never to see the light of day…again…”can I have a copy of that please?” eh yes..eh…think so”    Grab! Got it! I got it!!!…nobody even took the effort to call me but I finally got the report and the most idiotic letter I have ever laid eyes upon… I will not quote the whole letter, but what it basically says in the left hand corner was that it was dictated to somebody on the 4th of September (remember? The 4th of September, the date that was mentioned to me on the phone that tuesday morning) and …hold on to your horses here, because the speed of all of this might just take you by surprise : Typed on the …10th of September… Two paragraphs! TWO! It takes a week to type two paragraphs?!! Talk about speed typing!
The gist of the letter was by the way, that they had tried to contact the patient ,..me, but they could not get hold of me ????? (I have a phone, I have an answering machine! no message???? aargh)

So…they typed a letter..well, not really, they dictated a letter to somebody on Mars and a carrier pigeon brought it back to earth on the 10th, neatly typed up. That’s it…If it wasn’t that serious a matter, it would be totally hilarious..well, I guess dramatic or not, it still is …..bitter but still terribly stupidly hilarious. I briefly glanced overt the histopathology report: a vast document with long medical terms , over 10 paragraphs long about the results of my biopsies…biopsies received on the 14th, results and report made immediately…..no detour to the Mars Typing Colony this time it appears…

so why? WHY? Didn’t I get any info? No call? No nothing for over a month??? Baffling absolutely baffling. Anyway, the short of the matter is according to the histopathology that it is not the best case scenario nor is it the worst, it’s pre cancerous, needing no radiation or chemo or any of that nasty stuff. Just topical treatments and perhaps laser surgery. Deep breathing, calm, again..take control..breathe..you can do this! I told myself..I can, I will…….I AM… !

My GP is not helpful either by the way. He is fervent believer in saying “so, what do YOU think is best? What do YOU think it is? “or the best one I  have heard in a long time when I had to see him on wednesday to get my prescriptions for the treatment “eh..so..do you think that your irritation with the hospital and the staff there has caused the “irritation”..eh..you know..eh..down there?” Really I could have hit him over the head, but ….again..that would have meant being towed away in a straight jacket chanting "I’m not the crazy one!!!!!, THEY are!!!!!”….sigh…
Again, Life is funny! Monty Python was not far off the ball at all, the world is a surreal place….. just put your lips together and whistle “Always look on the bright side of life…phepho phepho phepho phepho (this is me whistling by the way)…lol..Always look on the bright side of life…

Well, now you know…it’s finally out of the way and we can get on with the REALLY fun stuff: Yarn !
This week I have some highly therapeutic super soft , wonderful yarns for you. Snaffle as fast as you can because there is only a very limited supply of them. Hand spun and hand dyed Bunny Mink yarn with a huge amount of yardage!

Just before we get to that though a photo that I was able to take of a bushtail possum mum with her baby on her back while eating our bird seed ..too cute !
Holding on to Mama......so cute !
But I'm sure the little one is eyeing off my strawberry plants on the porch...argh!

Waterworld, Magic Gardens and Bunnies

It’s been a month now and I’m still waiting for results .....this time I called more than three times and every time they said they left a message on the specialists’desk to call me back….and ofcourse I got no call back...nothing..if the hospital was any closer I’d hop in my car and stalk them personally..I think it might be the only way to get results and at the same time tell them how enormously inconsiderate and unprofessional they are. Day trip planned for next Tuesday !

In the meantime I have been bashing the hell out of star pickets and other construction materials, because highly physical activity was the only way to keep my sanity and at the same time doing something constructive. Besides, the sun was out for three whole days and I couldn’t let that go to waste!

Oh by the way, Paul had a great time at his “footy camp” and apparently there are some damaging photos doing the rounds of all the guys partying and having a great time. It would be good to get my hands on at least one for the record (and future blackmailing possibilities..lol).

The veggie garden is looking amazing ! it is not finished yet, I still have to do the entrance and finishing touches but a huge deluge got in the way ..Hopefully it will stay a bit dry today so I can do more before the Bunny spin in tomorrow. I heard from a good friend that there were people expecting a total garden tour then so I better get to it !
I had some amazing help from Gerda on Tuesday who also brought me some very special seedlings to plant: curly kale or “boerekool”as it is called in the Netherlands and it is just an amazing vegetable for a stew ! YUM!
Two garden beds were completed on that day ! A huge thanks to Gerda for helping me out on Tuesday !!
All the seedlings were all planted the day after. Garden beds were filled with our wonderful bunny chook compost, or black gold as I call it, seedlings  planted and mulched with yummy very nice smelling sugar cane mulch. I have left some room for more tomato seedlings, hot chilli plants and basil when they are ready.
Seedlings planted are: Tuscan Kale, curly kale, broccoli, celery, tomatoes, French beans, snow peas, broad beans, tsatsoy, pak choi, lettuces, cauliflower, purple pak choi, marigolds (or tagetes) (a great plant to protect against “bad insects”and get the “good”insects in ). Roses, lavender, hyssop, blue berries, strawberries, mexican orange bushes and thymes are going in next at the garden entrance and I am putting together a scarecrow in the shape of the Mad Hatter ;) It is looking magical already but I really want this area to look like an Alice in Wonderland Garden with nice little elements of wonder. A garden should be something that you love being in, the weeding and hard work you have to do will be much easier then . Raised garden beds and putting weedmats and mulch down not only protects the soil and highly diminishes the weeding you have to do, but it also looks good ! I have uploaded photos o f the veggie garden in progress shots on my photostream in the set Ixchel fibre farm , Here are some of the high lights :
and then there were three….raised beds
planting and mulching, I use sugar cane mulch on the beds and euca mulch on top of weedmat for the pathways. That way the euca mulch doesn’t deplete the soil of nutrients AND it stays in place much longer. A double guard against weeds !
the first garden bed all netted up and planted (except for spots left open for basil seedlings and chillies to go in and some capsicums) All is netted and I have added some trellising for the French beans and the snow peas.

weedmat almost down where it is needed, to be topped up with mulch and then the veggie garden wonderland entrance is waiting to take shape !
as if the weather knew all the seedlings were planted, it started to bucket down very very hard! The little yarra river almost burst over the morning after! It is a true waterworld here now but the all the seedlings are still alive and looking great!
