The Music Box: or how to go from Drama to Farce

and Bear stays calm and composed ...always

This week has been filled with spinning , spinning and a little bit of dyeing, but for the most part dealing with the never ending comedy of the broken Samsung fridge..yes people, it is still not over !

I have posted updates on my facebook page, but I know that there are some that are not part of the facebook community , so for those of you , here is the follow up of my fridge drama turned into an absolute farce that in the 1930s would be  perfect for Laurel and Hardy. They were probably more adept in taking a piano up a million steps , than Samsung dealing with a broken fridge under warranty. Since I dismally failed to record the events on film, I give you the Laurel and Hardy short film that won them an Oscar in 1932…

To recap the order of events in case you haven’t followed the installments , that are now seriously competing with the amount of shows Neighbours have been doing on Australian TV, here is a synopsis: My fridge broke beginning of September, after finally getting through to their customer (non) service call centres, they sent out 2 tecs  not to repair apparently but to assess, the compressor needed changing, so….3 weeks later they sent a tec to replace the motherboard  (??) apparently a compressor was not available…after which ofcourse the thing still did not work….i called and called and called…and emailed…and finally after me demanding a refund and compensation for spoilt goods, they sent me a document to sign and give them my bank details…the doc stated in small print that I was responsible for packing the unit up and for any damages that may occur in transport…since that was unacceptable I changed that in the small print, signed it and waited…waited..waited..waited..until a courier called saying my fridge was to be picked up …

I still had not received anything..so I said no , not until they pay me the refund, compensation oh and btw, about $700 in overdue fees..after which I got a call back almost instantly saying , they now wouldn’t pay me a thing…

they did transfer me the refund and compensation (no late fees..lol) that same day…I was in my right and they were …well….stupid not to have read the agreed upon document….

the unit was still in my kitchen ..waiting waiting waiting…until out of the blue I get a call from a courier who is just 30minutes away from my house to pick it up..a shame coz I wasn’t home! Coz nobody told me!? ,

second try a week later…..one tiny courier guy comes unannounced again…hauls it onto its trolly into the studio and just in front of the exit door huffs and puffs saying “:I cant do this, I have to put it back”…..another week goes by…..

Finally got a message that Samsung Service centre were going to pick it up last Tuesday..well, at least that is what they told me..waited a whole day!…two tecs show up (Laurel and Hardy…) saying they were only there to dismantle the doors and take the unit outside….with a lot of huffing and puffing they did.
I asked them several times “best to re assemble the doors so nothing gets lost in transit …” . …. “No! they replied. We talked to the office and its okay like this”...and off they went.

I let them sign a document that the unit was pristine inside and out, took photos and emailed my contact stating they had left in my carport disassembled. “not to worry a courier will pick it up tomorrow”….
I get a call from a courier in NSW saying it will be picked up Thursday…..

On Wednesday my new WESTINGHOUSE fridge gets delivered by Richard from Crawleys transport working for the Good Guys and all by himself manoeuvres the huge thing into my kitchen…with a smile and in no time at all, installs it and all is good..Richard was amazing ! I even took a photo …need a strong guy to transport a huge thing? Call Richard !

My super duper Westingouse fridge/freezer

Anyway, that was Wednesday…all good! The new fridge is purring way and works! It freezes and cools and is awesome. Thank you Westinghouse….

In the meantime the other unit sadly sits in the carport waiting,  in seperate parts, for pick up…Thursday morning…..nothing happens..
In the meantime I am home waiting and waiting. Nothing..so I write an email saying if the thing is not picked up that day, I will charge them rent, costs and loss of income…
About 15 minutes later I get a reply back and this is where I fell on the floor gasping for breath and laughing my head off….

“At this stage, Samsung booked for some technician to come and re-assemble the unit as our regional carrier will not collect a stock in a fragmented state. I will chase Samsung as to when this re-assembly was scheduled”

OMG …LOL…WTF…PSML….Im not holding my breath…lol…In the meantime the poor thing is exposed to the weather and wild life (a local wombat or a possum family may find it an interesting modern abode and move in)….

I will keep you posted what happens…it may take until 2015 until “Samsmurf” will pick it up..who knows…. I may never hear from them again….the rent will go up in 2014…….lol

Baby reindeer and Speed shopping

Believe it or not, I went for a drive today and …shopping!! Yes, I know! Inconceivable! Lol…Normally I don’t really do that except for food shopping, but it could not be helped I needed bras......oh the Horror!

Just to let you know, I hate shopping..I know it’s probably not normal, but I am one of those people that go out on a mission and BAM! Speed through a shopping centre as fast as humanly possible and get out at the speed of light. I don’t take it easy, have a coffee, stroll around , do some window shopping, no….if you see a beam of red light speeding past you in a mall, it will be me…
I don’t really know why I don’t like shopping..to my knowledge I have never really been traumatised that much, well, apart from the fact that every single time I went shopping for clothes, it was a drama..so yes, maybe I AM traumatised...lol
Today was pretty okay, because I knew where to get my size bras from and it wasn’t from a high end shop that only carries bras and things for women the size of Barbie with a cup size that would make a pea feel confident..no, I splurged and went to Big W where they do have my size and , here it is, they are able to sell these wonderful inventions at a horrific price of $12 ! If I had to make a bra, it would take me at least two days and the separate bits would already cost me $20 not even talking about the time and effort. Somehow being able to buy a piece of clothing for next to nothing is terrifying me ..it is just not logical. ...

While I was hopping through the mall at the speed Iron Man would feel envious about..I came across another phenomena: Christmas carols, music, decorations, gifts, ..every store , every employee was dressed up in red and green and wearing a smile on their face saying “are you shopping for Xmas?” I mean, I was always told that for every xmas tree put up before Thanksgiving (Nov 28 ) a baby reindeer has to die..I know! Cruel what I was told when I was a kid eh??!!  but the story stuck and now , after my shopping spree today, I doubt that there are any reindeer left at all ! ….I have a bit of trouble celebrating Xmas at all really. I grew up in places where you were cold to the bone , with snow falling and  freezing temperatures..apart from my time in Texas where no snow was to be seen at all either at xmas time ofcourse and now here in Australia. It is just not the same when it is so hot at xmas time you can wear shorts, flip flops and a t shirt…Im thinking of getting a snow machine..maybe that will help…lol

The Bunny Patronus and other Charms

It’been a super busy week again with getting all the clubs ready and on top of that , doing heaps of dyeing and making Wooshy clouds for the Bristlecone Harry Potter Read and Spin a long on Ravelry.

It’s been overwhelming response and so I have been doing little more this week than dyeing, packing cute fluffy Harry Potter parcels and doing some embroidery (yes, because I offered embroidery to the Harry Potter read a longers as well..see more of that later on this blog because I think you will love that as much as I do ).

I have to admit I was up most nights doing nothing else but that and doing spinning for custom orders….while watching Harry Potter movies or reading the books.
Ravelry is an amazing group of people from all over the globe and participating in these read and spin a longs not only introduces you to new friends and new ways of spinning and sharing but also, reading books together . I am still doing the Outlander series (Diana Gabaldon) and now the Harry Potter series have come on top of that.

I love reading ! It just transports you to this other realm and at the same time makes you think, philosophise and in this case share the experience with so many others. You may already know I am kinda weird..but I can be quite..well..let’s say …extremely focussed ..lol…when I am doing something for a specific project I totally immerse myself in that atmosphere. I listen to the music (over and over again I might add to the annoyance of DH), watch the movie, read the book(s) ..its eating dreaming and experiencing that world. It sure makes it easier for me to translate the sights and sounds and all the information in the books into colours and colourways.

Every book , every movie has its own identity, atmosphere , mood and music. Colours are extremely important in conveying that world and when you look closely to the palet of any movies or books, you can find that author or directors use them very efficiently and are almost part of their signature. Take Tim Burton movies for example: his movies always seem to have this dark indigo blue overtone to them together with a grey and parchment wash; with the Harry Potter movies it’s the same: it’s almost a sepia wash and a gorgeous deep burgundy velvet (think of the wonderful display of the tapestries in the Gryffindor common rooms in the castle) over the whole movies with tones of indigo getting more and more intense and darker in tone to further you go into the movies and the stories get more intense and sinister.

A very easy example of it is the extreme changes that take place in the Wizard of Oz, where all the shots at the start of the movie in Kansas were in black and white and as soon as they are not in Kansas anymore….it is an overdose of technicolour !

Which brings me to the next step: Colours represent emotions or better still, evoke emotions. The hard part is the translation of a totally different non visual medium like a book or music and to translate that into colours. I think it is a lot of fun to do ! It is inspiring ! Everytime somebody asks me “how do I think these colourways up and do I have a recipe book ?” I say I don’t have a recipe book or a production line type set up at all. Every colour I combine, every pigment that I blend into one another on the fibre or yarn or fabric is not only an expression of “just”colour..no, it’s a colourful view into the working of my brain at that moment and time , being influenced by what I read, watch, hear and experience. It’s a whole package, not just a bunch of blended fibres and colours together, it is so much more than that.

Same goes for translating music into say...weaving or knitting: I have even tried translating music directly into weaving. What? I hear you say? Yes! It can be done! Its fun and almost working in some secret code and the results can be mindblowing! You just have to say that the note C –E-B is shaft 1 for example, D-F-G is shaft 2, etc..the only limit is your imagination !

There is a direct correlation between Weaving-Music and Computers; it's all to do with translating the different languages so to speak and displaying the same message in different media!
For example: It was Herman Hollerith, who developed the punched card for the American census of 1890 and who founded one of the companies that in 1924 merged into IBM. Less well-known is that Hollerith’s idea was derived from the punched cards used in the weaving industry since the 1700s. Hollerith’s brother-in-law worked in the weaving industry. In the 18th century, the silk weaving industry in the Lyon area of France had to cope with stiff British competition and in order to meet the challenge, several methods were developed to automate the weaving of complex patterns. This culminated in the so-called Jacquard loom, after the French inventor, Joseph-Marie Jacquard (born in Lyons, France in 1752, into a family of weavers). Jacquard’s system to program looms (first presented in 1801) was very successful and by 1812, there were already 11,000 Jacquard looms in use in France. Naturally, the British took over the system, giving their textile industry a tremendous boost. By 1833, there were about 100,000 power-looms in Britain applying Jacquard’s idea. Here is a picture of a programmable Jacquard loom (photograph by George P. Landow):

Until the 1890s, street organs had their music programs stored on cylinders with pins, of the kind everyone knows from musical boxes. Cylinders were expensive to make and could store only a limited amount of melodies of limited duration. So, the much more versatile and cheap organ books came into common use  in the 1890s. The use of punched cards for mechanical musical instruments was already patented in 1843 in Lyon by Claude-Félix Seytre, but the first significant “book organ” was built by the Italian Anselmo Gavioli in 1892. The pages of the book mechanically move over a row of keys and which move up as soon as a punched hole in the book passes. The keys are connected to intricate pneumatic mechanisms to open (or close) an organ pipe (or to initiate some other instrument), so that, in fact, the punched holes in the book regulate the onset and durations of the various musical tones available on the organ.

Here you can see a punch card system for an organ ( photo taken from National Museum Van Speelklok tot Pierement in Utrecht, the Netherlands).

So , in a way, everything is related isn’t it? And there is definitely a way to translate the “different languages” into one . You can translate the holes in the punch cards to music or to various weaving patterns and patterns even in knitting. In the end : everything in life comes down to zeros and ones ……
