Under Pressure

Spinning Pure Luxury while wearing an evening gown
and doing acrobatics..
why not multi task and look gorgeous at the same time I say..;)

The world can be a strange place… when I was checking on fires and news in general this morning I found that goats took up a prominent spot in the odd news bit. One goat apparently got booked in Sydney by a policemen for eating a flowerbed and got acquitted. The policemen failed to book the owner and instead booked the goat..as if the goat cared one must ask, but the owner was happy that the goats name was cleared and he didn’t have to pay the $450 fine.

The one goat mention that really got me was one in Norway of all places. A road tunnel in northern Norway will be shut for several weeks after a 27-tonne truckload of sweet goat's milk cheese caught fire. How can cheese catch fire I ask you? But..okay… flames engulfed the tunnel last week and gasses from the melting load hindered firefighters. It took four days to put it out ! Four days to put out goat's'cheese!  The driver was not hurt and no other vehicles were in the 3.6-kilometre tunnel at the time. Lucky!... The tunnel near the small Arctic municipality of Tysfjord, some 1,350km north of the capital, Oslo, likely will be closed for two more weeks ! Well, there you go. Cheese is more dangerous than you think!

In the meantime in Australia…the temperatures have been soaring again near 40C and, there is a mere 65.000 hectares burning in Victoria near the Alpine National Park. Lucky there is a cool gust today with some rain and cooler temperatures, but the high winds are not helping I’m sure.
Living in a very high fire risk area like we are, you always have to be on your toes. On the other hand, with Bothwell Spin in only a month away I am working very hard to be able to offer the Tasmanians some special IxCHeL goodies. So, I won’t be making this blog a very long one: I have to get back to the dyepots ! I do have something very very special to offer all of you loyal blog readers and all I can say is this:

"Life is too short to play with bad fibres or bad men", somebody told me once. So, here is my latest super Luxury blend top that is going to make you drool. I can say this with certainty, because I have seen the reactions of people who have had the privilege to ...eh..."test cuddle" them…lol

Oh and why did I call it No5? Well, because there are 5 totally luscious fibres blended in this Pure Luxury Top :)  Enjoy !

You harvest what you sow...

It is still hot…yesterday it was in its 40Cs again and you know you are in trouble when you start fantasising about penguins and visiting Antarctica, while standing in front of the freezer grabbing that last icy popsicle with “emergency”written on it. Still, I have been spinning angora….I wish I could have spun it in the freezer but alas, we couldn’t fit… The big push to get ready for Bothwell Spin in March 1-3 is on! There is so much to dye and spin, so heatwave or not, the show must go on! When its this hot here , living close to the forest can be dangerous: everything is tinderbox dry and it only takes a tiny spark to have everything light up like a Christmas tree. It is amazing how many bushfires destroy hectares and hectares and it can be quite scary especially when you see is inching up closer and closer. We have been very lucky this year but the season is far from over. Lots of energy and water has been poured over the vegetable garden that is going great apart from some kales that now have been decimated by green caterpillars unfortunately..but I do not spray chemicals on my veggies …instead I handpick the green monsters off and ….yes I know it is cruel..feed them to the chickens….. Since I started the vegetable garden and planted heaps of seedlings, started plants from seeds, saved seeds and replanted again..it is magical to see things grow and its alos amazing how much we have actually saved shoppingwise ! We need a lot of greens for our bunnies and growing it yourself, knowing that there are no chemicals used is so rewarding. Even if you do not have a large plot , even a balcony can provide you with an opportunity to grow some of your own food and yes, it does taste better I guarantee it ! I have made huge pots of pesto from my abundant crop of basil and there will be tastings ofcourse tomorrow at the bunny spin in. I have to admit I added more garlic , our herb infused oil and our own chillies as well to give it that extra bite :Yum! Here’s the recipe for those who want to give it a go: 1 cup of packed basil leaves freshly picked (preferably in the morning. I always pick everything in the morning herb wise because the heat has not yet evaporated any essential oils ); ¼ cup of pine nuts, ½ cup of olive oil, sea salt, 60 grams of grated parmesan cheese, chillie flakes( for the adventurers)…. Blend it all together in your foodprocessor or, if you don’t have one like me, use a stick blender.. Mine almost burnt out though but then again I did do a lot and it was HOT! Lol Once you make your own pesto you will never touch the supermarket stuff again ! Great on toast, as a pizza base and on pasta…well on everything really ! Enjoy!

Exciting Plans and Bunny Cloud Wishes

a Bunny Cloud

The new year started off with a bang ! Or should I say a heatwave and unfortunately for a lot of people a time of bushfire threat. To all of you in Tasmania and New South Wales where the fires are still raging through tinder dry forests and bush or grass lands ; please stay safe ! Let’s hope a cool change with rain will come soon ! Let’s hope for lost of bunny clouds ! We had our rain and cool change which has definitely made it easier to stand over the dyepost and prepare pigments ! preparing blends and spinning yarns in 42C heat was no picnic either so I am very grateful it is a bit cooler .

On another note:
At the start of the New year I do what everybody does: looking at the calendar and see whats planned for the year to come. Well people, it is going to be a HUGE year this year ! My calendar is filling up fast with shows, markets, spin ins, work shops and more! I have added new dates to the “dates to remember”section at the end of this blog for you. Synchronise calendars ! lol

Exciting news break : I AM GOING TO BOTHWELL! I already signed up last year but I can tell you now: I am going with my Tardis packed to the brim!
Preparations for the Bothwell spin in are in full swing: new blends prepped, ready for the dyepot new yarns being spun, batts and woosh fibres are slowly but surely being organised , mini skeins and sock yarns are next. The Bothwell Spin in is an awesome bi-annual event in Bothwell Tasmania. This year they are celebrating their 35th year reunion and it is going to be HUGE FUN! There is so much on it would be hard to put it all in this blog so I will give you the link to have a look at right here: www.bothwellspinin.com.au

There is ofcourse the ;longest thread competition (the one who spins the longest plied thread from 10grams of fleece!), there is even a yarn bombing event organised !, there are demonstrators and ofcourse lost of fabulous fibres and yarns to be cuddled and adopted into a good home ! It is going to be fun ! So, don’t delay, book your tickets for a fun journey to a magical island Tasmania !

But whats happening now! I hear you say: Well, I have dyed some more of my new IxCHeL blend Angel Bunny Tops : since they were so popular last week ! This week I have dyed them variegated and the colours have come up so beautiful. it is hard for me to stay away and not immediately put them on my spinningwheel ..lol Also some Glitz tops , great for creating some bling in your yarn, just add a tiny bit to your batts or tops while you are spinning them and Tada! You will light up in the dark so to speak. You can make it as LOUD or subtle as you want, but I love the way that this Glitz, or trilobal nylon which its also called just adds a bit of extra interest to yarns and batts.

The Angel Bunny Blend is a wonderful mix of blue faced Leicester tops with angora bunny, Cashmere and Tencel. Tencel is a plant fibre. It’s made out of wood pulp and it makes a wonderful fibre to spin and wear. It shines like silk, is soft, strong and very purlescent. It adds a wonderful element to the softness of the cashmere and bunny and strengthens the shine of the blue faced Leicester wool. All in all : it is another IxCHeL blend I am extremely over the moon about. I have also redyed some of the long colour repeats and semi solids of last week, so have a look at last weeks blog and don’t hesitate to order from last weeks offering as well.

Happy Hot New year

Bear Free ranging on the porch

First of all: Happy new year everybody ! May it be a wonderful year filled with love, happiness, sharing, fun, laughter and lots of creativity !

On another note:
It’s a Heatwave here in Australia! It’s Hot! Very Hot…and it is going to stay hot for a bit longer so I have been told. “Normal”people would go to the beach, the pool, hang over the aircon or the fan. So what have I been doing? Yep, spinning, dyeing and blending, well not exactly in that order..lol..but you know what I mean. So, now it’s scientifically proven I am totally addicted to doing anything fibery and no heatwave can stop me…I have been taking advantage of the sun and have been solar dyeing…meaning using the heat of the sun, whih was quite substantial yesterday at an oozing 38C! and today it is even going to be hotter! Imagine that!..the indigo and walnut and mushroom dyeing wnet like a breeze ! and the effects are amazing.
I have been doing two types of dyeing effects: semi solids and gradient long repeat dyeing. That last one is new. You know, sometimes you just want a colour to gradually blend into a lighter tone or a different colour without it being interrupted by repeats. I have dyed my new IxCHeL blend called Angel Bunny Tops that way so you wont even have to resort to Navajo plyeing to make the colours stay together. Its great when spinning fine and it is a wonderful effect even when doing art yarns. It will make your yarn look like a gradient progression of tone and colour: MAGIC! Imagine that shawl you always wanted to make that goes from a gorgeous sunny yellow to a dark indigo blue, or that pair of socks you wanted starting with a lush green and morphing into a sensual purple? Can you see it? Just have a look at this weeks offering and you know what I mean.

Last year I have been experimenting lots with new blends and new fibres like Bison and yak in order to offer you wonderful new blends to make your fibre art even more magic. Discovering new fibres and ways of spinning them or felting and let’s face it: it is always so much fun to try something new. I wa especially enthusiastic by the Pure Luxury tops that were on offer and the new camelbunny silk blend that I have now added cashmere to just to make it even more irresistible. I am always looking to improve, invent new things and dream up new blends. That is why I van proudly say that today there is another new blend that is just amazing to touch and spin. That coupled with the new gradient dyeing I have been doing to it, makes for a fab new adventure to try out ! Start the year with a Bang!

A view of the Angel blend semi solid dyed tops in the 5 IxCHeL colour ways that go so well together ! The semi solids are a great way to spin on their own ofcourse but also a fabulous way to spin it into a fine single and ply with that variegated top to create a beautiful yarn that will accentuate all the colours in your variegated single.

Better get on with the show ! Enjoy this weeks offerings !!!!
