The sheep with the coolest hairdo !

Well, I promised you a nice funky looking sheep and here it is: the Wensleydale. So named because it hales from the wensleydale region in the United Kingdom not because it eats the wensleydale cheese. And, on of my favourite sheep breeds because of its long curly locks and its lustre.

The Wensleydale is a breed of domestic sheep that originated in the Wensleydale region of North Yorkshire.  Possessing a blue–grey face, the breed was developed in the 19th century by crossing English Leicester and Teeswater sheep.

One of the largest and heaviest of all sheep breeds, the Wensleydale has long, ringlet-like locks of wool. It is categorized as "at risk" by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust of the U.K. as it has fewer than 1500 registered breeding females.

The Wensleydale is a large long wool sheep with a distinctive grey black face, ears and legs. The ears are slightly elongated and stand upright. They are naturally polled and have a tuft of long wool on top of the head which is not typically sheered (for aesthetic purposes). Wool from this breed is acknowledged as the finest lustre long wool in the world.

The fleece from a purebred sheep is considered kemp free and curled or purled on out to the end.

The mating of a Leicester ram with a Teeswater ewe in 1838 made the famous ram 'BLUE CAP' who was the first sire of the Wensleydale breed. Today this breed is established throughout the United Kingdom and extends into mainland Europe, this breed is also being established in the United States of America.

The Wenseleydale tops are very easy to spin and hardly need any twist..remember it is a LONG staple wool. you can easily spin it very fine laceweight or you can corespin it as well, making it a very lofty and shiny single that way and still retain strength.

A Fuzzy Head and other fibre musings

So, did I do lots of resting last week after that ominous over exhausted fainting spell? Well, yes and no…Due to my curfew (no dyeing after midnight…) I try to dye as much as I possibly can during the day now and ruyn around like a headless chook (easy to do that) but just have to stop at midnight , before I turn into a pumpkin splattered on the floor....lol

It is also exceedingly hard to get things dry in this kind of wet weather and drying spaces are at a premium at the moment. I was extremely happy that the sun was out all day, although a watery one, but at least I could dry stuff outside for a while ! Phew ! So much easier!!

That doesn’t mean there isn’t wool and yarn spread out all over the house ! Which also means that if I do faint again, I will have a soft landing. Not that I am planning to anytime soon.

I still have about 8 different blends to dye and my pre felts and the paj silks for my felt kits, but , like all of you told me, I have to take it “a bit” easier. My head is still filled with , what feels like a fizzy water bottle and if I move too fast , the effect is like I had a bottle of whisky..wooozy without the hangover so to say., in short…I have no other choice at the moment than to take it very easy. I did get the new Diana Gabaldon Book “written in my own hearts blood” in the mail the other day and since I am an “outlander – fan” and can’t wait what happens to Claire and Jamie next, I am looking forward to some reading in my “spare time”…;-)

I know I am going to disappoint lots of people by saying this, but…you know the funky sheep breed I was planning for this weeks update? Well, I had to postpone that batch for a bit.Not to worry, I will put them on display on next weeks update for sure! I just had to do heaps of work to get all the clubs ready to be sent out on Monday and I just could not get the funky gorgeous sheep tops ready in time.. ..slap me…lol Here are some photos though to give you an idea of things to come and you can always have a guess what is going to be feature breed on next weeks update !

Also, I have some very good news! You remember the Gra Troendersheep , the super rare breed that was on my blog update last week?
A batch of natural grey of this gorgeous rare sheep breed are on their way to our farm as we speak! This means that I will hopefully be able to offer you more of this amazing fibre soon and will definitely have some at the Bendigo show as well !!!: Hand dyed and natural.

Lots of people have asked me if I could send them the raw fleece, but unfortunately I cannot. It is impossible to get raw fleece into Australia due to quarantine measures and even with washed fleece it is very very hard and a luck of the draw as they say. Since I do not want quarantine to tell me they have to destroy the wool or irradiate it at ultra high cost, I get the fleeces washed , scoured and combed before they get shipped over here.

I can however, supply you with clean and natural Gra Troendersheep tops as well as my hand dyed ones soon ! yeah !

For this week there is obviously no fibre or yarn update as such, but there are ofcourse the club sign ups that are still open until july the 8th if you would like to make sure you get a fluffy magical parcel in your letterbox each month !

Please don't hesitate to contact me at any time if you have any questions okay? Always happy to enable. All my contact details are to be found at the end of this weeks blog entry. Have fun !!!

A Floppy Bunny and a rare sheep

You already know that it is an absolute busy wool and fibre dyeing Mayhem here, it does not really need explaining that I, again, am obviously overdoing things.
I have always been famous , or infamous, depending on what your opinions are on the matter, for being uncontrollable in my energy : it’s either feast or famine as they say..most of the time feast though with hardly any famine (holidays or down time) .
Working long hours (til 5.30 or 4 am in the morning) finally took its’ toll a couple of days ago, when I was on my way to the bedroom just about to turn in for the night feeling a bit woozy ..”I’m tired, it’s normal, I’ve been working too late and too hard again” ..I had to hold on to the couch to catch my breath and the next thing I remember was me wondering why on earth there was a dog tail hitting me on the face and a naked man towering over me shouting “wake up!”, or “ “you okay!?”, which obviously I wasn’t because I had fallen head first on the ground, just missing the fireplace on my way down.
I had absolutely no idea I was out for the count. I had no recollection of me starting to fall down or the falling part all together. And, in that first blissful moment just before being woken up by a whincing dog and a naked man, I was happy and resting and did not have a care in the world. Oh boy, did I have an amount of pain afterwards though: my back hurt, my knee hurt, my head felt numb and I was dizzy: concussed. So, to make a long story short(er): I have a curfew now, not allowed to work ridiculous hours anymore..Bendigo or no Bendigo.

I did promise you two rare sheep breeds on this blog..alas, I can only offer you one, for obvious reasons. But it is a VERY rare breed and I thought that will just have to do this time.

Remember the Norwegian Qiviut from a while back? Well, although this is not a woolly mammoth it is a very rare woolly sheep, also from Norway, and there are only 80 of them at this time. In my book, that is super rare! Luckily, when I was chatting to the Qiviut people, they offered me some amazing wool as well and voila! Here is it is for you all to enjoy!

The sheep are called the Grå trøndersau or the Norwegian Grey Troendersheep. The Norwegian Grey Troender is a very rare breed of domesticated sheep that originated from crossbreeding native landrace sheep with the now extinct Tautra sheep in the late 19th century. There are currently approximately 80  animals all happily grazing in Norway. Yes, they are super cute as well (insert smiley face here…lol).

Originally bred in the Trøndelag region of Norway, from where the sheep derives its name, the Grey Troender are most commonly varying shades of grey and white in colour with distinctive white markings under the eyes. The wool of the sheep is uniform with mean fibre diameter of about 27-30 micron and 2–3 kgs greasy fleece weight.

The wool was traditionally used for handicrafts and the pelts were used for woolskin rugs. The adult live weight of ewes is between 70 and 80 kg. The mean litter size is 1.8 lambs born per year. The present population numbers only around 80 sheep but it’s increasing. In 1998, the Committee on Farm Animal Genetic Resources established a project for collecting and freezing semen from Grey Troender sheep rams in an effort to revive the breed.

The fibre is very lofty and resembles the Shetland wool but with a bit more weight to it. It has a wonderful spring and vibrancy and luster to it and it spins up beautifully. I only have a very limited supply for obvious reasons,  so if you want to try and get a taste of spinning this very rare breed , please hop on board and email or message me.

Please don't hesitate to contact me at any time if you have any questions okay? Always happy to enable. All my contact details are to be found at the end of this weeks blog entry. Have fun !!!

The Improbability Drive

  Bunny Venkman project

The mad rush before Bendigo has started , full on and with vigour.
I still had to finish some urgent custom orders though and that’s when you realise, the universe has not really thought the whole working, multitasking phenomena through. If it had, we would walk around with at least 4 pairs of hands, two heads and a couple of extra legs to kick ourselves every now and again , and, no ears at all , so we would not hear the deadlines WOOSHINGS past.

Unfortunately, evolution has not been very accommodating and has yet to offer us the on line shopping convenience for extra pairs of anything.. Oh well…maybe I will just have to be comforted by the sound deadlines make when they start whooshing past.

It is this time of year that I also seem to develop an extra need for the ultimately illogical, funny and totally out of left field..you know, just to counterbalance the ultimate organisational juggling that is needed to get the Bendigo show on the road.
I smile a lot (most of it illogically while listening to tonnes of strange illogical books), run around like a headless chook, stand long hours in front of dye pots and mixing pigments, listen to loud music alternated with the total madness of literary quantum physiscs while at the same time forget what time it is: Bed time, Dinner time and all other sorts of time that most people take for granted and have fought over with the establishment go straight out the window in my small nook of Pre-Bendigo Madness reality.

It is not anything I would label as sanity and before I will go all goobledy gook at you, I will confess that I could only ever tell anybody to do this,  when they have been thoroughly and totally infected by the fibre and yarnoholic bug. If not, take a step back into the real world. Me on the other hand , have always loved the craziness of deadlines, the improbability of goals I set myself, and have always coupled it with a passionate disregard for any logical (and monetary enriching) employment.
It is in a way strange that I have never really fared well mentally coping with authority, but on the other hand I have found that I have never really had such an enormously whip lashing, satanically flogging boss than myself….lol

Anyway, All the custom orders are almost all done, ranging from lace spinning yarn to slubby yarn and organically spun pure bunny art yarn and dyeing felt and silk. Now it is time to get everything done for the Bendigo show.

I have over 300 kilo’s lined up and prepped to dye in the next month! Not only new IxCHeL blends (like the superhero and happy tiger and the super new QIVIUT blend Tundra) but also paj silk felt kits, our dyed angorino felt scarf and wraps and how can I forget, the funky bunny bats and wooshy clouds! So , we have come full circle now: it’s back to the deadlines whooshing past..lol

This week, I am offering you some exciting happy tiger tops that are an absolute wonder to spin and can cater for making the most amazing art uarns but also fine yarns, depending on whether you spin it straight ofrom the top or , for the lace option, predraft and open up the hemp fibres. Anything goes and because there are so many different types of fibres in the happy tiger top package, it will create that heavenly yarn you always wanted to in so nmany different ways !

Please don't hesitate to contact me at any time if you have any questions okay? Always happy to enable. All my contact details are to be found at the end of this weeks blog entry. Have fun !!!
