You harvest what you sow...

It is still hot…yesterday it was in its 40Cs again and you know you are in trouble when you start fantasising about penguins and visiting Antarctica, while standing in front of the freezer grabbing that last icy popsicle with “emergency”written on it. Still, I have been spinning angora….I wish I could have spun it in the freezer but alas, we couldn’t fit… The big push to get ready for Bothwell Spin in March 1-3 is on! There is so much to dye and spin, so heatwave or not, the show must go on! When its this hot here , living close to the forest can be dangerous: everything is tinderbox dry and it only takes a tiny spark to have everything light up like a Christmas tree. It is amazing how many bushfires destroy hectares and hectares and it can be quite scary especially when you see is inching up closer and closer. We have been very lucky this year but the season is far from over. Lots of energy and water has been poured over the vegetable garden that is going great apart from some kales that now have been decimated by green caterpillars unfortunately..but I do not spray chemicals on my veggies …instead I handpick the green monsters off and ….yes I know it is cruel..feed them to the chickens….. Since I started the vegetable garden and planted heaps of seedlings, started plants from seeds, saved seeds and replanted again..it is magical to see things grow and its alos amazing how much we have actually saved shoppingwise ! We need a lot of greens for our bunnies and growing it yourself, knowing that there are no chemicals used is so rewarding. Even if you do not have a large plot , even a balcony can provide you with an opportunity to grow some of your own food and yes, it does taste better I guarantee it ! I have made huge pots of pesto from my abundant crop of basil and there will be tastings ofcourse tomorrow at the bunny spin in. I have to admit I added more garlic , our herb infused oil and our own chillies as well to give it that extra bite :Yum! Here’s the recipe for those who want to give it a go: 1 cup of packed basil leaves freshly picked (preferably in the morning. I always pick everything in the morning herb wise because the heat has not yet evaporated any essential oils ); ¼ cup of pine nuts, ½ cup of olive oil, sea salt, 60 grams of grated parmesan cheese, chillie flakes( for the adventurers)…. Blend it all together in your foodprocessor or, if you don’t have one like me, use a stick blender.. Mine almost burnt out though but then again I did do a lot and it was HOT! Lol Once you make your own pesto you will never touch the supermarket stuff again ! Great on toast, as a pizza base and on pasta…well on everything really ! Enjoy!
