There was a time that certain colours were just not put together. It was not even worth a thought , worse, it was a disaster to combine them! Fashion Police would arrest you even before you left the front door in an attempt to safeguard all that is good and tasteful in this world. My grandmother, by all means not at all a fashion police person and definitely not wearing say, green and blue or red and pink together. My Grandmother Charlotte, or Lotte for short, with her German heritage, would always say “ Grun und blau putzt die Sau”.. I have no idea how to translate to make perfect sense in English…but it’s something like “ green and blue look good on a pig”..lol..don’t ask.. apparently you shouldn’t wear those two colours together…I was , offcourse , always a rebel and put everything together: green and blue, red and pink..anything at all really.
My grandmother with my mum
look at that wonderful 1920s fashion and hair
Wish the photo was in colour so I could see the colour of the dress she's wearing
Then offcourse it is a “rule” you shouldn’t combine different tonal values of anything..it just looks off they say…again, when you are experimenting with colour and textures and all different values and tones, why not? Just like anything as time passes, our vision, our look and our tastes change.
As a matter of fact, I always laughed out loud when the fashion industry , yet again, tried to convince people that the next BIG fashion colour would be YELLOW! I mean, yellow? Never! And now, I don’t know whether its to do with the fact that I have been rather smitten by the quirky Minions of the Despicable me movies, I now find myself liking, no , even loving yellow. Again , there are different tones of yellow , from the mind blowing super in your face yellow and the mild chamomile ochery yellow, but whether on its own or combined with one of the least expected colours as a compare, purple, it looks absolutely amazing !
Why my opinion about yellow has changed, I have no clue, but the fact is, maybe by the sheer Minion indoctrination, everything looks so much happier combined with yellow. Go figure !
Same thing goes for pink. You know that barbie pink? Was no big fan either and look at me now….I want to put pink in everything…lol..Don’ t worry, I am restraining myself.
I love looking at fashion shows because of the wonderful drama and theatrical set ups…it’s like art. The line up of clothes on the runway whooshing passed you and then its all over and in no time there is need to put another show up for the next season. It’s there, its done, its gone and for those who can afford to buy a Haute Couture dress , they wear it once and in the closet it goes.
Prices by the way are staggering, anywhere from $20.000 to $200.000…its mind blowing. I once asked why is it so expensive and apparently teams of seamstresses work on them to measure, working long hours to embroider them and fit them perfectly…hourly rates and all considered, that the price is that high...eh maybe...…..I once was asked to sew and embroider somebody’s wedding gown…my hands still shake at the thought of it,hours and hours and hours, days! I spent on it….i got the equivalent value of a cheap model espresso machine for it…lol…
I guess, as with everything, its not only the hours and days spent on a garment that makes the value, it’s the name on the label as well. Just imagine if for anything you have knitted, spun or woven, you calculated minimum wage rates per hour….we can but dream..lol
Anyway I digress….Colour. Here’s a look at how good all different pallets look together:
