This time of year is the most busy of all and it seems that every year it somehow gets busier and busier. This year seems to be the toughest of all. It doesn’t help of course that the flu caught up with me. Too much to do and then BAM! Somehow the universe tells you to either stay in bed or slow down…and right there and then something happens that will have a lot of people in the crafts and arts nodding their heads in agreement: you start doubting yourself, your ability to cope to create..everything !
Life is not that easy and sometimes..well, sometimes we just have that amazing knack to make it even harder than it is. I have had this discussion with a couple of people today and especially for those of us who struggle on a day to day basis with self esteem, it can be a tough ride. The thing is, most of the time, we are our own worst enemies. It’s the way of thinking and acting on it that just seems this vicious circle, like a spinning wheel going round and round and you cannot get out of your thought stream.
Everybody always says to me “ oh but you are so bubbly and so sure of yourself and extrovert”…yes and..eh… no. Every day I go through training. Again and again. I thought for today it would be a good idea to write something in this blog of something I know a lot of people are struggling with: thinking badly about themselves or being negative.

Being negative about things and most of all yourself does not help anybody or anything. On the contrary, it makes everything harder. It gets you down and most importantly it stops you from creating. It is what I call this inner struggle that can be a blessing (because you are forced to look into yourself) and at the same time a curse (you have to train your brain to work it out). It is really like the glass half empty or half full analogy. But how do you get out of this thinking pattern?
As a geek/nerd/Dr Who lover, I came up with this analogy of negative undermining thought and The Silence. Every time you think negative about something or yourself, it taints you. It changes your thought and your action. Not any amount of chocolate or alcohol or drugs can help. The only way to repair that is to change your way of thinking. This may sound stupid, but I think it is much easier to go on a diet to lose some pounds than it is to change your way of thinking. It is a very hard process and there are a lot of relapses. Most of them because the brain does like to work in a way that it has been accustomed to for years: it’s easier that way…on the surface that is. Below that surface there is a turmoil of stuff going on.
So what was I talking about this Silence Dr Who thing about? It is memory.
In the Dr Who episodes where the doctor sees The Silence and looks away, he then immediately forgets he ever saw it..
Well, that’s what I think happens with negative thoughts as well : You put yourself down or you think negatively about a situation , you tend to forget you put that grain of doubt in your mind....yourself…: The Silence of Negativity.
So how can you change that? Just like negativity “marks” your way of thinking and acting, just take a pen and mark your arm or a piece of paper, what ever works for you. Make that thought visible. Everytime you catch yourself thinking badly about yourself or your art or your work or whatever you do: add a mark. Before you go to bed, look at your sheet of paper or your arm ( before you take that shower..;-) ) and see how much you have marked and tainted yourself and your thinking.
Just by marking it down, you made your thought processes visible. You won’t be able to forget now and most importantly you can train to think differently about yourself.
The only thing left to do now is to make sure that every day after that, you will wind up with less and less negative marks on your piece of paper.
And less and less negative marks will result in getting rid of that crippling doubt and fear in whatever you do.
You will start to change your way of thinking. Over time you can interpret the process and make it count even more: start counting your blessings. Start seeing that you are so immensely lucky to be here in the first place. Make your mark…positively and ....create with a smile on your face !
