Thank you to each and everyone of you who have messaged me, emailed, sent postcards and wished me a fun Christmas and a happy birthday. What an amazing feeling to have so many people thinking about you. I am totally humbled by the love you have shown me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am ever so grateful. You are the reason that I am still here spluttering out my thoughts and my fibe adventures on this blog. You are the reason why I still have hope for humanity. Hold on! that comes across as a bit "heavy" but ......it's true.
Over these last months, there have been so many moments filled with dread about the things to come with so many people expressing hate; either for politics, refugees or other human beings for being different than they are, so much misunderstanding and fear and anger. I think that is what scares me the most. This 1930s kind of tsunami of fear and hate being almost legitimised by the fact that the person who spoke freely and unabashed about violence and hate is going to be the president of the so called "free " world......
Looking back on this year with only a day to go, the one thing that stands out to me is the loss of so many friends..too many: friends I have known personally and some who I am still grieving for, others who I may not have known personally but have been part of my childhood growing up, or they were part of my cultural dna so to speak. I know I am not the only one feeling this kind of loss. And then there are the people who totally deny everything like that being of any importance. Brushing things like that off and to get on with it. I am an empath, Say that to me and alarm bells go off..lol
I know I feel compassion for each and every living being, which does not make life easier sometimes, but the alternative is being a rock in the ocean with the waves of time, sorrow and happiness flowing over you , not budging at all. I'd rather be moved. I know I would not be "me" without feeling these things and expressing them. I would not be able to create. What is the use of being human if we exclude others from our lives, or only allow ourselves to feel if it is limited to an exclusive bunch of people? I believe limiting our compassion is dangerous. It is as dangerous as living in a bubble and excluding each and everyone who disagrees with us. I think it is time we are able to have a healthy debate again on whatever subject: whether it is politics, human decency, knitting patterns or the type of spinning you like to do. I have read so many people say that when they put a photo up of their knitting or spinning project, they get comments that they are doing it wrong, or it is not right, or it is bad, sometimes they even get nasty comments or bullied. I have seen creative people get totally stiffled by this kind of behaviour. Think before you post something, think about how you would feel getting that particular comment. If you are just commenting negativity: hold yourself back and tell yourself that if you cannot say anything constructive, to not comment at all.
If I could wish for anything at all in the new year, it would be for a more compassionate way of thinking for everybody, Respect and defenitely a sense of humour combined with an explosion of creativity.
Which brings me directly to what all of the previous was brought on by: yes the amazing, hilarious, witty, awesome force of nature that was Carrie Fisher. Too young when she was drowned in Moonlight and strangled by her own bra, as she once mentioned she liked her obituary to read. I met her twice: The first time in the early 80s at the time that Empire Strikes back was just released when I was in the States lucky enough to meet the cast , second time was at a booksigning where I had the pleasure not only to be "glittered and sparkled" (You have to know she was very into glitz and glitter: she left a trail of it everywhere she went. ) while receiving my autograph and a hilarious remark about my "I'm not fat I'm fluffy" badge which I gave to her. (she was very into the most ridiculously funny stuff. What can I say, we connected).
I still can't believe this force of nature has left us so soon only to be followed by her mum, Debbie Reynolds, the day after. It is such a tragedy and loss. My heart goes out to her brother Todd, her daughter Billie and her beloved Gary. I will always cherish her immense sense of humour, glitter and what she meant to advocating help for mental illness , particularly Bipolar disorder.
