Sparkles and a Bunny Star

Sparkle bright TicTac

What a week !!!! dyeing, carding and skeining, labeling all the truckload of clubs and custom orders and also on palliative care duty for our beloved TicTac. TicTac left us yesterday after being an absolute Star in our lives for 9 years. She will be sorely missed. I hope she keeps sparkling up there with all the other bunnies at the Rainbow bridge.

So ....apart from being totally overworked and in the scheme of things totally minor issues like , dealing with some (fill in expletives here) *?/!@#$  , my week ended in devastation losing TicTAc. So I cried lots last night, everything just piling up one on top of the other , making me feel like I was on teh brink of a nervous breakdown.
The choice was mine: Cave in and get totally uncontrollably sad and depressed about just about everything OR work my behind off and get my **s into gear for tonights' blog update. I had already prepared a new product line for tonight but a lot of work like photographing, skeining, labelling and naming the yarns still needed to be done. I chose option number two. I always seem to choose option two: i still remember my mother in law at the time checking up on me after my first miscarriage: "why are you spinning and working?" and I replied " it's better that way. Yarn makes everything better". So tonight I have something special for you : not only yarn but Sparkly yarn to top it all off ! Bling and Yarn! I mean: how can it not mnake you feel better !!!!???

The New IxCHeL Sock yarn base is new to my base dyeing yarns and it makes me happy just touching and knitting with it! it has sparkles, it has super fine merino and it has super soft cashmere to make it even more awesome! I wish you could have a feel of it and see the sparkles glimmer all over the place. I took a video of the yarn earlier today and out it on my instagram and IxCeL fibres and yarns facebook page if you would like to check it out !

So for todays update I have the new Silver Star IxCHeL Sock yarn and a fabulous launch price to boot ! treat yourself to some Sparkles !

a Busy Bunny

Safe to say the Easter bunny is exhausted after delivering all those chocolate easter eggs to you all LOL…no seriously: it has been mental! Not only because of the launch of the new IxCHeL sock yarn blend (and , I will just let the cat out of the bag now: OTHER YARN BLENDS IN THE MAKING !!!! check the blog next week! FOR ANOTHER NEW EXCITING YARN BLEND! OOPS SORRY CAPITAL LETTERS…..phew…breathe breathe breathe). And then I had the brilliant idea to announce a new rare sheep breed adventure, totally forgetting the Clubs also need work ! So,  Seamonster adventure preps and blending and ofcourse the work done to get the April Clubs all ready ! Yep, safe to say, no quiet time here at the farm. So, believe it or not, I forgot to buy chocolate Easter eggs ! Was it not for a gorgeous present given to be by my friend Annet, there would not have been any chocolate easter eggs in the house! Can you believe that ???!!! Outrageous! Well, that’s what happens when you are tied to the studio and dye room.....LOL

Tied may seem a bit of a stretch and I certainly do not want you to get the wrong idea, but , honestly, when you run a farm and craft business, it is extremely hard to make ends meet. Meaning: what you do not have you cannot sell. If I don't work my butt off to offer you all fluffy , enticing fun stuff, it's not like you are going to  give me any monetary reward. In cslow craft, as I like to call spinning and dyeing and weaving, knitting (not to mention embroidery and quilting) ; everything takes a long time. a Loooooooong time. it's not like opening a  bag and  in 5 seconds you have product to sell on a website. No , that does not happen here. This week for example I had a very sick bunny: TicTac. She is quite old and has huge eye problems as well as I fear arthritis and neurological problems that are catching up with her. She has been with us for over 8 years. I am grateful for her company and the love and fluff she has given us over all those years. The deal is that I clean her up, am on poo duty, make sure she is  very comfortable and hand feed her.  That is not even counting the day to day caring of all our other animals and the clipping and grooming, blending, sorting, toe nail clipping, etc etc...so yes,I forget to get chocolate eggs and to eat...The animals come first. they are the reason I am here and in second place, all of you. Yes YOU! YOu are the reason I am doing what I do. If it was not for you, there would not be an IxCHeL fibre farm, no rare sheep breed adventures and bunny care for me. So, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

For todays update I have some awesome Icelandic sheep tops I dyed with natural homegrown dyes like woad, weld, indigo and mushroom and madder root ! Madder root is amazing to work with but you really have to take care of keeping an eye on the temperature when you are dyeing: if the temperature gets too hot the red colour will turn to a muddy brown ..I wanted to have a nice deep warm red..so I had to baby sit the dyepot for those and if I may say, the three years of nurturing those madder plants and then pulling them out hesitantly (awwww) to become the madder root pigment to dye with was an adventure! And well worth it !

There are not many wild or domesticated local animals in Iceland, but the wildlife and farm animals Iceland do have are very special. Did you know there are more Icelandic sheep in Iceland than people?! Some farmers own nearly a thousand sheep of their own. The extensive farm land around Iceland's coast is full of them, and every summer they roam the highlands and mountains freely. They're tough, sturdy little animals, and grow lots of fluffy wool that the Icelanders use to make all their woollen goods. Icelandic sheep are a breed that has remained virtually unchanged for over 1,000 years, maybe the oldest and most genetically pure sheep breed in the world. Modern Icelandic sheep descend from sheep ferried by Vikings to Iceland during the 8th and 9th Centuries. Attempts to “improve” the breed by outcrossing generally resulted in increased vulnerability to disease, and so raisers on this island nation decided to keep their selective breeding attempts confined within the breed.

The Icelandic sheep is an ancient North European breed, slightly smaller than modern varieties, whose double-layered coat is uniquely suited to cold and wet conditions.

A few weeks after the lambing in May, sheep are sent to run free and graze in mountain pastures until autumn, feeding on the rich and nourishing vegetation. Many farmers formerly allowed their sheep to graze in outlying pastures over the summer months, but as a result of the recent reduction in flocks, animals are increasingly kept on home pastures. Farmers gather their flocks in the autumn. Usually, the round-up is carried out on horseback with assistance of sheepdogs. The process can take up to a week. During this time, participants stay overnight in mountain huts located throughout the highlands. Each sheep farmer has his own earmark in order to identify his livestock. After the gathering, the sheep are all sorted into designated pens, according to earmarks. Many people, farmers or not, come to watch or take part in this event on the last day, which is usually followed by a big celebration the same night. This is a tradition cherished by Icelanders.

Icelandic sheep are a beautiful and eye-catching breed of sheep with incredible colour variations and seventeen possible combinations of colours and patterns. Known around the world for their fibre, the Icelandic sheep provides a soft, lustrous dual coated fleece. Icelandic sheep come in a range of natural colours and patterns which provide lovely wool that is very versatile and easy to spin, making this wool a handspinners dream.  There is heaps of information and even videos I put on my autumn shearing of the icelandic sheep on my blog  a while ago in case you want to have a look at the whole story and some more cute photos.(here's the linkie to the Icelandic Leadersheep blog I did. There is another adventure planned later in the year for these amazing sheep for which you can sign up)

Anyway, here I am, it is Friday again and update day and this week, filled again with Nordic Splendour (I’m obviously still in a Viking mood!..lol) . Here are some of the Icelandic Beauties responsible for this weeks fibery update :

Have a fun weekend and snaffle ! All the “ how to order details” are shown at the bottom of this blog. You can always contact me on facebook or ravelry and even if you do not see something here , ask me: I am always happy to enable !

New Adventures and Yarny eggcitement

Happy Hoppy Easter !

I have been extra extra busy to give you an amazing update tonight filled with NEW IxCHeL Sock yarn colour combinations, Handspun super special Angora Bunny with Wallaby yarn AND last but not least: the announcement of another awesome fibery adventure , waiting for you to sign up!
Last time it was the Valais Blacknose Sheep adventure which was shipped out last week…this time I am offering you something amazing and super special : The world famous rare sheep from North Ronaldsay or as I like to call them the Seaweed Eating Sheep and what an adventure blend it is!!!!

There will however be silver in each and every one! Yes, you heard it right: Silver!!! The blend has seaweed fibre in it and the seaweed has been infused in a silver solution to make it extra beneficial.
Seaweed has beautiful qualities also as a fibre: it has skin protective and healing qualities; The brown algae (ascophyllum nodosum or knotted wrack) of SeaCell® fiber come from the cold, pure fjords of Iceland. The slopes of these sea arms are sparsely settled, and their untouched nature is a paradise for wildlife. The seaweed are full of minerals that they draw from the geothermal sea water – enriched with vital substances, free of contaminants and of the highest quality.

Among other things, these brown algae offer a large quantity of vitamins and minerals, such as magnesium and calcium as well as the active ingredient fucoidan, which constrains the growth of tumor cells.
It is effective against influenza viruses and high cholesterol levels, relieves skin diseases, and contributes to the skin’s healing process.
Antioxidants are also a defense against free radicals, protecting against skin damage. Your skin needs nutrients to stay healthy and beautiful. Mineral substances and trace elements are important, for example, since they invigorate your metabolism and have an impact on cell renewal, water balance, the healing of wounds, and protection from the sun. On the other hand, amino acids have a smoothing effect, while vitamins support the natural protective role of the skin and protect it from free radicals.

All these nutrients are present in the select brown algae in SeaCell® to a high degree. Your skin benefits from their health-promoting effects: Due to the natural moisture of the skin, the vital substances in the seaweed are set free when the fibers are worn.
The main nutrients in this special Seaweed fibre that is part of the new Fiber adventure blend I am very proud to offer you are:
• Minerals: e.g. magnesium, calcium, potassium and phosphorus
• Trace elements: mainly iron and iodine
• Amino acids: e.g. glutamic acid, histidine and alanine
• Vitamin: B, A, and E
Their beneficial effect can be absorbed in your skin over time while wearing your magical Seaweed blend– even after many washing cycles!

No wonder the sheep of North Ronaldsay love Seaweed!
The North Ronaldsay Sheep are the only animals in the world, aside from a certain Galapagon lizard, to be able to subsist entirely on seaweed, leading to its nickname ‘seaweed sheep’. The breed is thought to be over 5000 years old. The breed is farmed within the Northern Ronaldsay Islands, Orkney and kept nearby the seashore for most of the year. In 1832 the Laird of North Ronaldsay decided that his pastureland should not be wasted on native sheep and a dyke was built round the island to keep them on the shore and off the land. It was most probably this separation that resulted in the preservation of the North Ronaldsay, as it prevented cross breeding which had been the downfall of other Orkney sheep.
The North Ronaldsay is one of the Northern Shorttailed primitive group of breeds that also includes the Manx Loghtan, Soay, Shetland and Icelandic . The North Ronaldsay is still mainly found on its native island, the northernmost of the Orkneys. The sheep keeping system on North Ronaldsay is unique and involves a stone wall which keeps the sheep on the seashore and away from the cultivated land for most of the year. This wall was built in 1832 and since then the breed has evolved to survive primarily on seaweed. The sheep live on the seashore most of the year around and are only brought onto the better land for lambing.

The North Ronaldsay is one of group of primitive Northern Short-tailed sheep and represents a very early stage in the evolution of domestic sheep. DNA studies have shown a close relationship to sheep found in the Stone Age village of Skara Brae on mainland Orkney, which dates from 3000 BC. In 1832 a wall was built around their native island to confine the animals to the foreshore for most of the year in order to conserve the inland grazing. Since then the breed has developed its distinctive metabolism due to its diet of seaweed, which also renders it susceptible to copper poisoning under standard sheep management systems. North Ronaldsays are very sensitive to copper and will die of copper toxicity if put on the wrong type of grazing. This is due to their seaweed diet and the unique metabolism they have evolved. They should not be fed commercial sheep mixes as despite the label saying “No Added Copper” the normal ingredients used will often have a background level high enough to be toxic (ten parts per million is too high). The North Ronaldsay is capable of surving on less than larger breeds and is an active browser, used to ranging over long distances in search of food.

Colours of their fleece are variable: including white, various shades of grey, black and moorit (deep brown). The double fleece has coarse outer guard hairs and a fine soft inner coat. I have never ever felt and dyed something as extraordinary as this sheeps fleece. It is springy, almost feels moist even after its scouring and washing. It almost feels lkike it resists the dye when you pour the pigments on and everything immediately flows to the bottom, leaving the top layer of the fibre springy and almost without dye. At least, that is what appears to happen…it takes the dye beautifully and retains its springy texture and openness.
It is a dream to spin and work with. You can make a yarn that is strong and still soft to wear. It is very very special ! There are only about 600 of these seaweed sheep left in the world. Only through our effort of conservation of the environment and conservation through appreciation of this rare breed by spinning and knitting its fleece, can we hold on to one of the oldest and most special breeds in the world alive today.
There is a documentary about the island with its seaweed eating sheep on youtube for you to see.  It shows you what the island looks like, the important wild life : Seals ! (warning ! Cute overload !) bird populations and ofcourse its most famous inhabitants:" the seaweed sheep ! (another cute overload ! @ 16:50 mins in) :
Enjoy!
