Remember to be Awesome !
What a busy week! Clubs, custom orders and the awesome McClelland Guild Spin in on Wednesday. It was so good to see old friends again and although I was totally under the weather, exhausted and there were dark circles underneath my eyes, I enjoyed every second of it.
No rest for the wicked though: I had the clubs to finish and lots to be carded and packing to do, not to mention to get the patterns for the yarn club to get ready and writing an abbreviated story of this months artist in focus : Paul Gauguin.
I have a hard time doing that last bit because his life was so full of travelling and I keep being distracted by the fact that I would LOVE to visit Tahiti or travel again. It is such a buzz to soak up different cultures and points of view to keep everything “real”. It’s always good to get another perspective. It enriches you and the stories you hear can invigorate your creativity, so I totally know why Gauguin was travelling extensively.
I kind of miss that…yes, submission of guilt here. I have been travelling all my life (goes with the medical anthropologist territory I guess lol) but ever since I landed in Australia I have been almost a 100% in situ : caring for animals keeps you grounded in one place and no holidays.
There are good things about that, but also down sides. Farmers or those who run sanctuaries do not tend to get lots of time away from their flock. We care for our babies and love them, nurture them and see them as our family. During the last few days , especially after the vegan protests in Melbourne that were on the media , I was quite distraught and upset. I am caring for my animals , my family, all the time. There is no holiday, no time away. The animals come first. And yet, all farmers are put in the same basket as those not caring for their animals at all (what ever the minute percentage might be ). Every time I have done a market in the city, I have been sworn at, spit at and told I kill my animals for the fibre. Of course this is not true: I give my bunnies a haircut every 3 months and groom them every other day. But the protestors do not seem to want to know that reality. I get upset. I believe all creatures should be treated with respect. And yet, when I contacted a bunny sanctuary I wanted to support right here in Victoria, to show my support and offered them yarns and help, they treated me like a low life and told me straight off that it would not be good for their image to team up with me, a "bunny farm"... I was taken by surprise by their narrow mindedness and also got an instant insight in how obstructive their point of view was.
My belief is to treat everybody as you would like to be treated. And that includes all life, not only humans. There are ways to make sure that animals are treated well, especially on big farms: regulate it and put good laws in place and oversight.. Small farms or micro farms however have the best practices. We are organic and we are family, we are small, we care. I wish their kind of activism would not throw away the baby with the bathwater....it would be better for us all, including the animals.
But, enough of that. I am still here. We have happy bunnies and I keep swimming ….
