Painting by Piet Pietersz (+/- 1560, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Oil on panel, 76 x 63 cm) |
Safe to say it is always an exciting week here, lockdown or no lockdown….
The August clubs were shipped off on Monday ! Yeah ! So that means that photos of all these club fibres and yarns will be appearing on my Instagram and facebook accounts very soon ! Also, lots and lots of custom orders have been dyed and/or spun and shipped off ! It does seem like a never ending list of what I make myself do, so the one thing you will never hear me say is “I am bored”….lol
I do stress. I have to admit that. I also am one to take the bull by the horns so to speak and make decisions so I do not have to stress over things I cannot control . I try to be logical, especially now.
That is why, with a heavy heart, I had to make the hard decision , again!, that I will not be at the Pakenham craft show this year in early October. It may seem like a long way away, but seeing the numbers and the way we are all still far away from being 80% vaccinated and relatively safe, I’d rather not put anybody else in danger.
I know it is tough but I am pretty certain that 2022 will be a much better year to get back into the show circuit.
In the meantime you can rest assured that I will do my very , very best to make every Friday update a fun one ! I love what I do and I hope you love what I do too…lol
I do not normally jump the gun, but NEXT Friday is the first SEPTEMBER update : September is RARE BREED MONTH! do not mistake that for the rare sheep breed month I have just finished up. This will be rare breed other than sheep. Lots to look forward to again! But, that is NEXT week !
Saying that, I had a bit of a sleepless night last night (again) because of my pandemic decision and so much other stuff, which I won’t go into now , but I can tell you that painting, creating and doing my craft is an adventure and keeps me sane.
I often hear people say that it must be the best thing in the world to work what you love to do and may have started out for some as being a hobby. You know, spinning yarn, painting , dyeing, knitting, weaving, crocheting and felting. And, I do not want to put a damper on things because I totally think I am super lucky….but….. There is a big “however” coming though.
This of course all depends on what kind of attitude or rather mindset you have.
For me, it is often a very thin line of being super happy to do what I do and a sense of dread. This sounds very dramatic and I did not mean it to come out that way, but of you are in any way shape or form doing something in, what is commonly known as “The Arts or Crafts” (let’s just all, for now, put it in the same bowl shall we? Lol), there are not only barriers to overcome but also that inner demon :
am I good enough?
Can I do enough to survive?
Will people buy from me?
The difficulty is that you start out on this path as an artist and then be confronted by having to do this as a “business” . You have to eat and pay bills after all. Now that exact thing is sometimes a conflict. I mean the arty stuff and the business stuff….not the bills and eating, although I am sure that is a struggle as well sometimes…lol
In business it is like an elite sport of having to compete. Most of the time that is because they have to sell the same thing that the other business has on offer. . In Art or in Craft, it is the adventure of exploring, of giving in to your ideas and evolving; everybody is different, so there is no “best” or “better”. Trying to “compete” as an artist or crafts person is impossible when you realise everybody is different ! There are so many differences in technique, blends, colour use and personality, that there is no “best”, there is only different.
As the wonderful Neil Gaiman says in his book “Art Matters” :
“The world always seems brighter when you’ve just made something that wasn’t there before. (…)
Art matters, because your imagination can change the world”.
You should enjoy every minute of your craft and not worry about deadlines or if anybody likes what you are doing, or if you can come up with another idea.
Enjoy what you do, don’t worry about it.
I keep telling myself that, but , sometimes, I forget and niggling doubt sets in. And then, I take a long hard look at myself, after a sleepless night worrying about stuff I can’t control or of what other people might think, and say out loud :
“Have some Fun!
Make mistakes!
Be Yourself !”.
Whatever it is you love to do: do it ! Who knows what kind of an adventure it will take you on ! Plus : it can make a bad day much better !
