Another roller coaster ride of a week. It appears that all my fibre and yarns shows until early July have been cancelled, the Bendigo sheep show in July and the Black and Coloured sheep show in September are taking a “wait and see” attitude…so everything is pretty much up in the air.
Listening to the news it is hard not to draw parallels with the Spanish Flue epidemic a century ago. So many people sick, in hospital , infected and far too many have already died from this virus. Governments are taking very harsh but necessary measures: closed shows, shops, being asked to do “social distancing” (a new thing that will definitely go in the most widely spread word use in the dictionary of 2020), shops are closing, shopping centres are ghost towns and most of us are asked to stay home or self isolate. The upheaval is huge and in times like these it is normal that there are extraordinary acts of hoarding and negative behavior just as much as there are extraordinary acts of kindness.
Here at the farm everybody is doing pretty okay. We are isolated at the best of times so in a way there is not much of a difference in life style for me, except for the fact that our farm income has almost totally come to a standstill with no markets at all. Our pantry is full though and we are preety self sustainable apart from the usual bills but I am totally aware though that for so many, the current measures are a total life style change and a way to live.
Please stay safe, please take care of one another and try and stay calm. Here’s where your hobbies come into play: there has never been a time to explore either new ways of creating or envelop yourself in your knitting or crocheting or weaving or embroidery. Focusing on creating something with your hands gives a little peace, a time to breathe, a time to stand still and not worry. There is no point in worrying: it only makes your stress levels rise and you know what? It doesn’t help.
If there is anything I can do, message me. If you feel you want to chat or need help, anything..let me or your friends know! You are never alone. Make time for something special and there, my friends, is where todays blog update and the fluffiness I have Prepared for you, comes in : Bunny Bison Bliss tops! And Of course the club sign ups and the tweed yarns are also available. Everything delivered to your door and made with love.
American Bison mean a lot to me. They hold such stories and history that for me, as one with Native American roots, means something very special. Enormous herds of bison once occupied the American Great Plains, and were critically important to Native American Plains tribes as sources of meat, hides, horn, bone and sinew. American Bison were hunted close to extinction by white settlers and the American military during the western migration, but they were given protected status and the population rebounded in the second half of the 20th century.
There are now substantial populations living in the United States and Canada; all the wild-ranging herds are found in state, provincial and national parks. In addition, there are several herds owned by private farmers and even some in Australia !
As a spinner and weaver I love to play and experiment with all sorts of fibres and the Bison being so close to my heart and heritage, I could not resist to try and design a blend that would not only do it justice but also excel in its beauty, handle and all over amazing way to spin and use in our fibre art.
Bunny Bison Bliss tops have the following ingredients: Superfine 17micron merino, angora bunny , Bison, Baby Camel, cashmere and tencel. It spins like a dream!
I have managed to spin so fine on my Tibetan Spindle with that blend that it is finer than sewing thread! More importantly, the tops are extremely easy to draft even without pre drafting : it is like butter in your hands so to speak. It holds together beautifully while still open and super super soft. Especially when spinning with a support spindle it is very important to have a very fluffy open easy to draft top to work with.
I found that spinning on the support spindles that I prefer to spin with batts or fauxlags. Well, that time has definitely gone! I LOVE spinning with the Bunny Bison Bliss tops! Try it and you will never ever look back. This week I have the natural beauty of the bunny bison bliss tops on offer and some hand dyed bunny bison bliss tops as well.
Here are some photos of some gorgeous Bison
