Yellow Brick road

I bet no one, NO ONE, would have thought that 2020 would turn out to be like this ! There have been enemies of the people galore, most of them highly visible and political , you know, invading countries, starting wars and all of that terrible dictator stuff. The thing is, you can see that coming. Granted, a lot of people did not see a lot of the second world war coming, but hey, there were signs and you could actually sense them, see them. Later on, with all the horror movies, even the exorcist ones, you could SEE the enemy. I mean, watch out for the girl who could rotate her head 360 degrees right? Zombies/ No worries ! I got them covered: just get my crossbow or my super sharp katana knife and I am right beside you , cutting the heads off together with Michonne (from the tv series “walking dead”) to save the human race; asteroid coming? No worries!!! We got NASA and all the nuclear fire power in the world to destroy those big bastards out there. And then there is this…..tiny, tiny molecules and viruses we cannot see with our eyes. Invisible enemies. And that is just what makes everything that much scarier. These times are life changing and yes, scary !

When I was studying medical anthropology back in the “80s, there were some scary times as well: lots of my friends were dying of AIDS, another enemy that we could not see. And I was thinking of doing research as a young scientist in that field, trying to do whatever I could to help. I was discouraged and was told there was a lot more help needed with virology and malaria, only to recognose years later that everything is connected. There is no such thing as an isolated pandemic. We are all so connected. The whole planet, animals and us humans. Whatever we do..whatever footprint we leave, whatever natural resource we inhabit and influence, we will have to adjust and also bear the grunt of biology. Every interaction we have with anything has an effect. It is really important asking yourself the big ZEN question <”if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, has it really fallen?” YES! It has….we may not realise how much we have influenced everything, but every little thing we do will make a difference. /> Now more than anytime, we have to realise every step we take, every breath we take (not to quote the famous Police song ..lol) matters ! Now more than anytime, we need to realise that we have to protect the most vulnerable in our society, to be there for our fellow human beings and that everything is so, so fragile ! What do you cherish the most? What do you need to keep sane? What do you need to survive> All of these questions are so important and at the same time very clear at the moment!
We need communication, we need care, we need family, we need love, we need facts, we need music, we need creativity…no matter how you quantify creativity whether it be writing your thoughts down or painting or knitting or making music: this is the time you will know what touches your soul and what makes you happy. That, at least, is something to be grateful for.

I dread looking at the statistics if the Covid-19 cases, I dread looking at the suffering and the deaths that happen every single day all over the world. Numbers. Statistics, and every single number is a human being. Think about that ! it is a life. They are memories, love, possibilities, dreams, so many things lost and so many dreams still holding on!

I know it is such a hard time for so many of us. Loss of a job, loss of loved ones, loss of connection. At times like these, we need to realize that we are all in this together, that we are loved. That we are not alone! That we can survive only by caring and feeling responsible for each other.

Listen to your heart. Do not give into fear ! Do the right thing! Stay home as much as you can, stay in touch as much as you can.

and..knit !  there is a wonderful #whimsikal going at the moment with a gorgeous pattern from Domique trad (search whimsikal on ravelry) that you can knit with some of my IxChel tweed yarns.
